Hello
Just want to share some pictures of a "hirschfanger" dagger with its frog, large horn grip with silver DJ grip insignia which features a stag head with swastika set between its antlers and with DJ organisation letters below, silver dear hoof cross guard.
The blade is triple etched, the obverse and reverse side display highly detailed panels featuring hunting scenery, even the spine of the blade is etched.
Thanks for looking.
Regards

It's been modified, but it sure looks to be a bayonet frog.
It is not a hunting frog.

Yeah if you zoom in on the backing plate on the frog it's one of the DRP jobbies. Check out Wheelers reference he talks of these even has photos. Lots of collectors hooks these into postal bayonets which is an error also.I'm sure if you check the top of the metal plate it will have a DRP stamp.

Hello, some details of the frog:
the painted stainless steel sheet is rounded on top, plied 2 time in both sides with an angled shaped, riveted with 4 pins, curved to do not hurt the thigh of the carrier and stamped DRP for Deutsche Reich Patent.
Best regards

Ok, so this thing is trying very hard to be a Deutsche Jägerschaft hirschfänger which sadly it is not, the scabbard leather should be green, the clamshell generally should be a fluted type, the grip on this thing has been shaved near the ferrel and it looks like it was done post war looking at the colour, the pommel lacks any real detail, the frog is wrong, this blade should have a stamped Eickhorn makers mark which it doesn't seem to have. The fittings are of an Eickhorn style but normally are gilted brass for a forestry type. That should be enough to tell you its been put together post war.

Years ago Houston had a quickie reference you could download. Not sure if it's still on here. Maybe Vern or Dave know. It's not covering everything but it hits the high points and some of the dos and don'ts. Worth a look. I had printed it off when I had a computer.....it was a PDF maybe??

The rest is postwar.
