without going to an archival specialist,i would use a cardboard backing, stretch the flag as evenly as possible and use staples to adhere it to the cardboard, possibly very small hobbyist nails or pins could be substituted for the staples,,,just a thought

Bob & Lynn,

I wouldn't use cardboard, that stuff is full of acid and will do a number on your flag in a couple of years. Use a foamcore backer - should be easy to find a sheet in a hobby, craft or art supply store. Staples or anything metal like that can start to rust if the humidity is high in your region. I'd take it to a framer just to show him what you've got in mind and kick around some further ideas with a specialist in this area. Don't stretch it overtight and don't use cheap Scotch-Tape or anything similar. If you prefer the tape method
insist on something "acid-free, too. And last but not least, don't press it right up against the glass either, have a mat cut so it's just slightly recessed away from the glass. If you cut a mat, that should be acid-free also. And when your done, never hang it where the sun will touch it, it will burn out that nice deep red color in no time flat!

Lynn, if you do mount it, please let us have a look?

Best of luck and cheers!

Bill

Hi Bill .... I've picked up a 4' x 8' sheet of conservation grade foamcore which I'll cut oversize, then I've bought some stretchy grey material as a cover. I'm going to pin the flag as straight as possible then use red cotton thread to secure it on the 3 sides with a cream/white thread on the bunting....excellent point about the matting, which I will certainly do in addition to using conservation glass. This project will take me some time, but when it's complete I'll certainly post some picts of it on the forum. Thanks for the tips/interest !
