Let me explain: the owner scratches a name/number on metal before sending it to the jeweler so the correct thing is engraved or so that it is not mixed up with another item. In this case the ring was never taken to the jeweler for some reason:
- guy changed his mind
- spent all their money
- got shot in WWII
