Hi all,

I?m looking for some extra information of a dagger I own. It?s engraved with ?Frhr.v.Wrangle? I can only assume the jeweller meant the spelling to be Wrangel?

Which I believe is Lord Von Wrangel?

Looking for someone kind enough to help me try and locate the man and what rank he was etc. Any information would be very helpful

"FRHR" is short for Freiherr which means "Baron" if that is any help.

As Dave says, it's Baron von Wrangle, I do not think you can assume the jeweller got it wrong, there are thousands of German Barons, I would assume at the moment the spelling is correct, I only have 2 rank lists and he's not in there, doesn't mean to say he's not listed in the others.

Hello gents, there are several Freiherrn (Frhr) von Wrangel (differing first names) but not a single(!) Wrangle to find. Also only with the name Wrangle, without the title, there is no german Wrangle to find, no Wrangle at all.
I know, it is not pleasant to hear und some will simply ignore it, but Wrangle is the typical error of an english speaking engraver (even more as the word -wrangle- does exist in English but not in German). It is also -imho- absolutely impossble that a german engraver did this spelling mistake because the sound of the two words is a total different one.
In my opinion a nice army dagger has been destroyed by adding the prominent name only for higher proceeds once in the life of the dagger....

Hiya,

I?ve managed to find a Von Wrangle from WW1. Agreed there are not many wrangles but they do exist. Yes it is possible it was done post war to bump up the price but it?s more probable it was done in the period. I guess we will never know...

Hello Gozzy90, I would be very glad if for you if my assumption would be wrong. Can you tell us (or give a link or show a scan or screenshot) how-where you did find a Wrangle in WW1?

Hello Gozzy90, this could really be a first trace. It would be interesting to get the original printing of this list to find out if it is indeed the name or just a phonetic misprint.
