Over on WAF there is a topic about a photo. Not sure if its a period photo or not. They are talking about the SS items etc. But I spotted something - Know what we know about how the HR is made check out the roundish item upper left.

If it's a period photo then a longshot guess... Could it be a prototype honor ring case with decorative and numbered top?? It looks about that size.

Check that out Dean!!
Yes, Hap it sure does looks the same. I'm trying to contact photos owner to get a better /bigger/clearer scan...
IF it is WOW a lot of questions would be answered.. Some think the HR is made just as you make them.. Some believe on partially that the strip went thru a roll matrix with the design on it. Like the "Press - A - Penny" that goes way back to the 1920s!

G, this is a huge moment for our niche of the hobby here...btw, do not let this delay the release of your book please! (Just sayin) so really 2 huge moments for our hobby! Also I swear if I look at it I can see some of the band details so I for one really do hope the picture can be clarified...what do you guys make of the number at the bottom? I suppose dies could be serial numbered as a quality control measure...

I am still shooting to be done right at the new year [Jan.] I just barely touch on the HR in my 'Specials' chapter. Dons 'Black Book' is basic, made for all to read and understand and just about covers everything except how they are made. Craig tried but came to completely wrong conclusions in his book. The HR was either made like Hapur is doing it or with a pressed/cut/rolled type matrix .. I wrote thru WAF to the photo owner but no answer so far. Anyone know him and could try and get thru to him that would be great! Maybe it is just a box and we're ******** ring crazy!

At first I was wondering if this impression on the oval shape was embossed (pressed out/raised above the surface) rather than debossed (pressed into the surface). If we look at the shadow on the back wall of the box we can assertain where the light source may be. Also there is a shadow from the handle on the front side of the box. The light source is about 10 o'clock to the left and judging by the shadow and light cast on the SS object closest to us in the box, it is coming from somewhere near our left shoulder.
So what is this? A debossed ring die, or an embossed box? Looking at the light cast on the dome of the skull, my feeling is this is a die. An important discovery may be happening right now.

Here is an image reversed to show the positive product from the die, if indeed it is one.

G....a. We are totally ring crazy. B. L v K....nice work!!, thank you!! This is pretty big, potentially, so I think you guys are both right about not jumping to conclusions...we have all done that more than once... But seriously, other than the box/die idea...COULD this be anything else? I think it's important to vett this first IMO. G, I hope like you do we can talk to the photos owner... I know some photo guys, if you can pm me the info I can ask my sources ? Exciting week, yes?

From a design point of view, I can't see a strip of oakleaves being used right across the middle of a box. Don't you think it would be more likeley used as a border around the perimeter of the box? Looking at other circular objects from this era and country such as those carved wooden plates, we dont see designs with a motif running right across from one side to the other. To me, this looks uncannily like Hapur's die.
If this is a box and not a die, then is it a box to store the die in? Heavy card or something with the die embossed in the lid for easy identification? Were dies stored in boxes? Surely it would not be a ring presentation box. We have seen what they look like. To me this doesn't look grand enough to be a box. We are talking SS here!
This could be a huge discovery potentially debunking the casting theory, and a certain book...

Were dies stored in boxes? I have never seen dies stored in boxes, nor die boxes itself. Dies MUST be stored in DRY!!! place, this is most important. Since in die material is high carbon content they rust as hell. Usually dies are stored in shelf so all time you can see them and take care of them.

OK, so it is improbable it is a die box. Could it be a box in which ring components were stored, such as the skulls? I doubt ring bands would be stored in an oval box...
Yes I am grasping at straws here! I seriously believe this is a die to be honest, although other possibilities should be explored. Hapur, your posts are most educational. I look forward to seeing how this pans out.

Oh yeah dies have been kept in a few different things,,,and it is usually the Master dies.. I've seen dies in wood boxes, and the cardboard box I've seen/handled was like heavy waxed and re enforced [metal] corners. At a big show saw a small round die for like a button in a cylindrical 2 piece box..

Two things have me returning to the box theory: What looks to be like a seam line running around the side of the shape. And the edge of the 'die'. Could that be stitching? Oh, and the base of it seems to have a lip. What's that all about?
