Probably a dumb question as I know nothing about these:

How was the recipient chosen? Rank?, Gallantry awards?, Length of service, Nomination by senior officer?

well, I'm a bit rusty,,and my library was mostly destroyed so this is all from my bent mind! crazy grin

So, no award,,it was a 'gift' from Himmler,,,heres the quick skinny:

Originally the first 5000 SS members then a bigger spread of the first 10,000 members.

All who joined the SS before 1933

Holders of the Gold Party Pin

Holders of the Coburg badge.

Officers & NCOs who were members of the Nazi party and the Police before 1933.

SS men who were members for 2 years prior in the 'Annexation lands' [Flower Wars]

'Special cases' of Himmlers say so.. And of course you had to have a excellent record in the SS. Any infractions / Dis-honor and your ring could be pulled.

Please guys you see any mistakes correct me, or feel free to add on anything I forgot... Thanks!

thanks Odal...

Remember, no award,,it was a 'gift' from Himmler.. Even with the criteria for getting one Himmler could just give you one if he thought you should have one!
