I am considering buying an early Boker dagger. The blade is engraved with "Hohenstaffen Division," etc. That division wasn't activated until1943, begging the question why would such an engraving be on an early dagger? There is no date or name in the engraving - only the unit identification and a shield with SS runes within. The engraving looks period and matches the age of the blade. There several possible explanations, I suppose, but I would appreciate hearing thoughts from members. Thanks.

I believe that the division was assembled in France mainly from Reichsarbeitdienst/RAD conscripts (average age 18) that had to be trained ........ etc. etc. But to 'cut to the chase' - I think that the dagger as it exists now is unfortunately a very expensive version of one of the unit marked "SS" combat bayonets.
