Certainly looks like an original type 1 chain to me.It should be magnetic. The top right connecting link to the wotan knot looks unfinished or a replacement.Does it hace a grove in the center on the back of it? I think I can see a part of the grove in the picture. Rare item on the loose.

This one is highly suspect... no "DRGM" stamp on the clip under the wotan knot... chain appears to be solid metal and not plated... links appear to be burnished like a Type II... I would run from this one... below is a real Type I chain.

I also believe this chain assembly to be a new reproduction.

Thank you for giving your opinion but I have to say that in my books do not all bear the mark .... DRGM also say that if is magnetized and the end of the chains is normal because it is linked to the dagger .... Toni Which is a type II? Sr.JR as you can demonstrate your opinion? AHHH! the dolphin is a magnet By toni888 at 2012-05-24 By toni888 at 2012-05-24 By toni888 at 2012-05-24

So your chain is magnetic? Does the center scabbard band have one or two holes? The lack of the DRGM is not reason alone too call it a reproduction, some have it some don't. Could it be the super rare solid nickel type "1" chain or was the nickel platting so thick that it does tarnish with age. It even has the look of the upside down heart shaped nose compared to the others. If it is a fake it is near perfect.

I can tell you that 99.9% of the chains you find that are sans a scabbard are fake. Go to gun broker someday and see the latest repro's. Your chain is trying to be a type I and it does not have the detail a Type I should have. Most chains are on scabbards and if they are not why? Look at the background detail on a real type I chain.

It looks like reproductions have reach the point that an in hand inspection is the only way too dertermine if a chained or any other dagger is 100% legitimate. That chain is dead on with a DRGM stamp and a shiney plating who's to know whats modern.I won't be buying any of those online anymore.Pauls picture of his type 1 SS link stamp shows just how goofy legitimate pieces can be.Three of the most knowledgeable people Paul,Skyline, JR picked right up on it being a repro. Not a word from anyone without a PHD in Daggerology. Good luck in this hobby.

Zorro FYI the DRGM thing is NOT a definite must have. We know from experience that everytime we make a rule in this hobby we find exceptions. None of us has a PhD here we are all learning. And hopefully having fun along the way!!

For the last 10 years we have been seeing only the Type II chain assemblies which were first manufactured in the Eastern European bloc countries. This is the first time that I've observed a Type I example. As Skyline and Paul have mentioned, the quality falls down on the one that is shown. It is of the same color and appears metal content as the Type II's that we've seen in the past. Besides showing no age and new appearance, if you take your XP computer magnifier and enlarge the photos, it becomes more obvious that this is not a period loose chain. But it certainly would make a good replacement for someone that has a scabbard that is missing such a piece. A collector recently informed me that he bought a reproduction chain assembly out of Germany to complete a scabbard in his collection that was missing it.

The only thing that determines that chain a fake is that it looks too original.I see no obvious signs of a lack of quality.Showing no age and a new appearance. Are we looking at the same chain? It takes decades to get a patination that looks like that. That chain will fool the majority of collectors.

Tim, There is actually more when you magnify the photos of the chain up. Look at the cutouts for the links, look at the clip, take a close look at the connectors. Patina and age can be accomplished fairly easy. I think in the last 30 or so years I've seen probably one or two original loose chains. And a few times a single link here and there. They just are not readily available what so ever. Additionally these reproduction if installed on a regular M33 SS dagger will present a multitude of challenges themselves.

The basic lesson to take from this thread: Loose '36 SS chains are most probably fakesThere is no good reason for loose chains being available in good condition. I could see a beat up chain as being from a dagger being parted out but I would want to see the other parts before believing it. I am certain that there are imaginative answers such as "Surviving field upgrade kits" or "Factory fittings from the war's end".

The chain is a repro. In this case the SS proofmark is the easiest to spot red flag .
