The "pale" grey (once green but faded due to time) portepee is simply a cloth strap portepee instead of the much more common leather strap portepee. It did come in both varations, the small strap one with two silver lines and the "big" one with three silver strands.
They are not common because imo the straps were easily damaged during normal wear and therefore not estimated during the period.
My EICKHORN L�tzow sabre did come with the 3 strands big one but is damaged and with period repair.
