Hi,
A friend of mine stumbled upon a soviet navy dagger, 1950's dated with a dedication on the blade for service in the fleet from 1943 to 1950's something.
How common/uncommon is this?
Sorry, I have no pics at this time.

Best regards,

This translates into:
Midshipman (2.nd lieutenant equiv.) of the fleet, Vsevolody Koljadko
Baltic (fleet) 1943-1960.

First time I have encountered such a dedication, and I am happy to include this dagger in my collection!!! Smile

The dedication on the blade is not official one. There were no daggers issued with such a dedication. It is a "self made," most likely by the fellow officers.

Hi,
Yes, it is unofficial as you say. Also the dagger is (I think) 1955 dated, so I'd guess they either etched or engraved the dedication on the midshipsmans own dagger.

Have any of you guys any examples of other such dedications on blades? The most common I've seen is either by engraving into the grip, or by attaching an engraved plaque onto the grip.

I saw several unoffical inscriptions like this when I was in Poland between 1994 and 2000. The engraving is sometimes on the blade but more common on the scabbard.
I have no doubt that these engravings were period done, just not official like Andrey says.

PS, I wish I had purchased the examples I saw.

Totally agree >>this engraved dedication is not official but certainly period done. Maybe you can find this person or his family members somewhere in Russia Cool
