I saw this sword today at a local gun show. I believe it's a police piece from one of the smaller German states. The logo appears to be Eickhorn's but it seems not quite right. The sword's owner says it's German, imported for use in the US Civil War and made by the firm who owned the squirrel logo before Eickhorn. What exactly is it?

Trademark looks a little weak, but it looks like the blade has been buffed quite a bit and if so, that would explain the appearance of the TM . Looks OK to me, fwiw. This mark was used in the 1920's and early 1930s and even postwar. Joe S

These were short swords made in Germany and patterned after the French Briguette. You might find one on Gun Broker. I did. They were used in the Imperial period by the local Schutzmannshaft (constabulary) in cities and towns in the German states, as well as by private guards companies. They were carried in smaller towns into the Weimar era. Some examples had two rings on the scabbard, some none and were carried in an open frog.

Len,

As Joe says, this is a generic Police Schlepsabel. These came with both white and gold metal fittings and could be worn in a variety of ways. Here is an example with two ring suspension.

I have a May 1931 Carl Eickhorn catalog, "DIVERSE SABEL FUR OFFIZIERE, MANNSCHAFTEN POLIZEI UND BEAMTE". The catalog is in German, English, French and Spanish.

Page 7 has model 305 with long lug for the leather frog. Page 8 has 4 more models, 904, 497, 280, 1379.

Models 305 & 904 are identical except for the top scabbard mount. Note that the sword in the 1st picture of this thread looks like model 904 and the sword with the double hanger looks like model 280.
