This one arrived today and I paid a very reasonable price for it. I was well impressed with the amount of crossgrain left on the blade as well as the dagger as a whole. There's a couple of small chips in the grip, there's a screw missing in the top fitting of the scabbard and it looks like the eagle may have been replaced?
What do you think? All comments welcome...

Sounds and looks like you go a deal Scott. I like the blade, crossguards and scabbard. I'm not sure what is going on with the grip? Looks from the photos, that it MAY have had some type of work on it. The light areas next to the dark. Really can't tell for sure. But I like that maker and the dagger overall. -wagner-

Serge... you think the eagle has been replaced? I've never seen the lower end of the grip to have a groove in it from what appears to be from a blade either.

Scott, in my opinion, the eagle is a proper "point behind the head" nickle eagle. Outside of the wood gap at the eagles feet, which I have seen on many original "Non Questionable" grips, I can't tell from the photos supplied. What I have noticed on a replaced Political Eagles, is the original grime of 70 years gets cleaned away during replacement of the eagle. I use a stong Loupe in these cutout areas to any tell tale signs. I found that one can not go buy how "well" the eagle was installed in the grip. Since many originals are not installed flush from the factory. I believe all of us who have been around these for awhile can attest to that. So for the grip eagle I can't tell if it was replaced. With no obvious "pry marks" I would say it's original to the grip. I use a loupe with a light. With the right angle you should be able to look into the crevice. That will tell a lot. Now the grip itself I have a little concern. However I don't want to say that line "Gee, I've never seen that before", meaning that grip base slot. It looks old. However there seems to be some light areas on both ends, and mounting sides, of the grip. Usually a sign of recent work. But can't tell without a hands on. I'm not that excited about the crossguard to grip fit. I would ask 3 members for their opinions. Herr Mann and Skyline have, or had, this same maker. See if they would break their's down for a peek? And Mike McA. of the McSaar list fame. A true expert. Overall I think you got a great piece and in decent condition. McSaar Rated: 8. Fisher Rated: Rare 1 of 1,000. Unless you paid "Big Ticket" type money, I wouldn't worry about it. The dagger is original and rare. -wagner-

I think this is a fine piece and almost sure OK-there is always a chance the handle could have been switched unto the set of crossguards but this can be so in 50% of all the SAs we seen-the fit is not always exact due to shrinkage and some switchs can fit better than the originals-the indentation on the bottom of the handle?-because it seems to be at quite an angle and this indentation would not match a crossguard(or even a blade if someone screwed the handle down unto the blade without a crossguard)-? Could be a flaw that the fitter thought would never be noticed as not too many Brownshirts took their daggers apart to check the tangs and handles. I think the eagle is ok-I have never seen an intact eagle removed without leaving some wood message of its removal- one can remove an eagle with the wood intact if you drill into the eagle first, but of course the eagle is ruined- This one just looks good to me. Thank you, Mike

My HH has different crossguards marked H only, no X. The tang also has different markings with a P 3 P. It does have pronounced billet clamp marks that look like yours. Just goes to show these small cottage makers got their blade blanks from different forges.

But the same blade mark in the grip's edge! I knew I had seen it on one of my SA's but I was not sure it was the Hermann Hahn... nice to learn that it is typical to this maker. SDP, I guess you are also happy now, nice HH dagger go got there! Best greetings, Herman

My grip does not have the indentation that both of yours have. Herman what are the tang markings on yours?

seany I think your tang markings are farther to the left in your photo. I see what looks to be a P. Look closely farther up the tang. There should be a 3 followed by another P.

Actually upon breaking it down I see the P on my tang is backwards, so I'm not sure what I'm seeing on seany's.

Interesting indendation!
I wonder if this is something to do with the grip being held in place while shaping it?
