As noted, to safely put your awarded degen away or place it in a place of honor in the home, etc., while using your converted sword for official wear at ceremonies, duty, etc. That may be why so many early SS degens are found in nice condition when compared to many police swords. Similar to putting away your "Himmler" dagger and wearing another. That is probably why so many "Himmler's" are found in nice condition. We likely will never know for certain.
