As you know the SOS show is just around the corner. I have also found the gun show, just down the hall is fun also. I have bought a few nice bayonets there. Hope to see a lot of bayonet collectors there. If you see me walking around tap me on the shoulder and say hi.

To all Etched Dress Bayonet Collectors: Please stop by my table at the SOS (close to Wittmann)and lets talk etched dress bayonets. As most of you know I tend to get "long winded" when discussing my "children"

Wayne, you know it. Maybe you won't recognize me, but I will be wearing the funny cap. I have several adopted children hanging around my place.
John C, give me another hint...

John, You already have a great many "children" with RARE blood types. That's one thing I like about you John, you're always interested in new areas of this hobby and you continue to soak up knowledge and information on whatever your interest is at the moment. Soon you'll have your own table at these shows and then I'll be coming to you!
Best, Von Ryan

I found a few items for my collection at the SOS but more important is the fellow collectors I got to meet. I seen some etched bayonets that would make your head spin. Maybe the new owners will post pictures here someday. If you have never been, try to make it some day. Get there early, Thur. and Fri. are the best days. Most of the dealers pack up on Sat. afternoon.

Here is the "Bayonet Hawk" taking a break at the SOS. To see him swoop in on a KS98 with an unknown distributor mark is a thing of beauty.

Boy do I look old, it must have been the second 8 hour day of walking with my neck bent at a 45 degree angle. What fun. Denny G. and Dick H. treat me real well at the show. Next year I'll smile when he takes my picture.

Here is Terry with Dick H. Dick has been actively collecting since around 1950. He kept pulling things out from under the table that had Terry and I breathless. Friday morning he decided to put four helmets out on the table. All four were as close to unissued and you can get. They were; 2 M40 SD Luftwaffe - 1 M35 DD Heer and 1 M40 SD Waffen SS "Q". You just don't see stuff like this any more.

Hey Terry and the friend from Calvary CA! Appreciate the honesty pointing out the fake etched piece. If anyone wants to know the MAX certified dealer i got it from PM me. Guess that certification doesnt make one an expert in KS 98 etched pieces but caveat emptor. glad it was the first and last etched piece i will ever own.

John,
I would appreciate it if you would eliminate my name from the dealer that sold you the fake etch. As you know I certify each and every example that I sell as being 100% pre-45. I wouldn't want anyone to even suspect that I am the dealer you refer to.

Wayne...hmm you get enough rest coming back from the SOS? No you did not sell me the bayonet and It was not my intent to lead anyone to suspect you were the seller. I did not buy the bayonet from you..my apologies. Would you now be so kind to apologize to me for you making that assumption that I implied it was you who sold it to me?..thanks! Wayne Techet is the expert on etches period. John Z and Terry know what they are doing too...I think we can all agree that I cannot tell an etch that is fake. Now BCN forum readers be advised that if a militaria dealer has A MAX CERTIFIED logo it does not make all of them an expert on etches (I learned my lesson). Also I did not go back to the MAX Certified dealer to ask for a refund 2 years later so I must be fair to them. The experts on etches are here on this site so post pics and ask them questions :-). I did not and made the mistake. Oh lakesider trader..fat finger issue and thank you for pointing it out :-) Yes Calgary!

John, Nothing personal, I just didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea. Hell, I'm not even a "Certified Dealer".

John: Funny thing, but after our discussion at the SOS, I went home and looked through all my etched bayonets. And, guess what, I found a bayonet that I would not buy today from anyone. And, this, too, came from a MAX-certified dealer (a different one from yours). A while back, I found myself in the possession of a couple of daggers that, as time went on, I liked less and less. I was suspicious of them and suspected that they were not kosher. I thought long and hard about getting into the political arena of proving them to be fakes, but decided not to do that. Heck, one of them was even in a well-respected book! My decision was to go back to the dealer and say that I didn't like them and would like to return them after 2 years of ownership. The dealer got mad and called me names, but did take them back. He also charged me a restocking fee that I paid to avoid the hassles. I also paid it since I felt that I should have done this review and research right away instead of waiting 2 years. My advice to you is to try to return it to the original vendor. You have nothing to lose. Wayne, as for you, I didn't know that you were not MAX certified. This puts things into a whole new perspective. But, then again, I saw many a MAX certified dealer with obvious fakes on his tables at the show. John

You guys are making me ponder MongoBongo's computer magnification technique. (After 20+ years as a welder, my eyes ain't what they used to be!) Carry a laptop and dental scope to shows??? Maybe I'm just paranoid ?
