A related question. I hear a lot about the use of "sudsy ammonia" to spiff up gilded hilts. Ammonia is a common ingredient in brass polish, I assume the use of sudsy ammonia merely imparts a shine to the base metal of the hilt if and where the gilding is worn through and does nothing for the gilting,am I correct?
