I have one similar that came with a police officer sword. Of course, I don't know when it was attached.

A fire police Officer degen hanger would have silver fittings and a silver bullion faced strap. The vast majority of Imperial Army Officer sword hangers have red backing, gold fittings, with various color strap facings ( some multi color). Many will also have a rather heavy black painted brass or iron snap. Some of these hangers were used during the Third Reich period especially if an Imperial sword was carried which was allowed under certain circumstances. Also notice the checkered pattern of the leather on this hanger--typical of Imperial hangers but not Third Reich.

Red leather with gold bullion facing and gold colored metal fittings were the colors of the Trageriemen fur dem Langen Sabel of the Prussian Gemeindepolizei according to the 1932 uniform manual. As a matter of fact, this hanger is almost identical to the one illlustrated save for slight difference in the hanger chain configuration.

The photo is in black and white; the description in the manual gives colors and size of the trim. I will try and scan it. Prussian 1932 Gemeindepolizei is not WW2 era Nazi police. New regulations were issed after the nationalization of the police in 1936. Did Wittman write that it was a Fire Police Hanger or Fire Department Hanger. I can see it being a sword hanger for one of the other non-Prussian fire departments of the 1920s-1930s.

At the same time Houston makes a good point about the Imperial hangers. You have to work and research for a match.

I dug out Wittman's book and the only photo I could find was black and white. Am I missing the color photo that you matched to your hanger?

IMO this is not a Third Reich period manufactured piece although it may have been used during that period

Houston is correct. This is an Imperial Sword hanger, not TR.

Yes, it's Imperial/Weimar, but could have been worn on a TR or earlier sword. Some worn in the TR era were of Imperial/Weimar manufacture. Not "regulation," but still allowed.
