This is the silver badge that is attached to the top portion of the rope of a Bundeswehr Schtzenschnur. They come in Bronze, Silver and gold being the highest. I will post a picture of one as soon as I can find it.

Hi Bill,
I don't know the actual date of wear. Awarded throughout the cold war to present day. As you can see from the pictures above each service has a different color for the rope(lanyard). Navy, Army grey and not pictured, airforce which would denote a blue rope. Not unheard of but it's very seldom you see the gold in wear. Our German military colleagues can elaporate on this, but it's not easy to obtain the gold, every shot must hit the target in order to recieve the gold award. First you get two practice rounds w/no adjustments, using only good Kentucky windage and a prayer at a distance of I believe 300 or more yards(open range),then you have so many rounds to expend at different distances and you must keep track of how many rounds fired at each distance. If you miscount your screwed, no gold. And it's not only one weapon, it's several plus a machine gun, submachine gun, and pistol (all open ranges). If you miss one shot in either weapons event, you miss the gold. "It was fun and the competetion was high". Well, Thats how it was when I competed.

Cold War to present. Many U.S. Army USAEUR veterans qualified for these awards after training with the Bundesheer.
