Got these 2 in today. Is it common with different backing? Looks like he was promoted, different pips on them. Good to hear what you think?

Goldgelb (golden yellow) waffenfarbe would imply flieger, fallschirmsjaeger or nautiker (whatever that is).
Rank would be Oberfeldwebel. (collar tab would be with 4 metal gulls and tresse on collar)

Very nice set for an Oberfeldwebel of the flying troops. Nautikers were officials and used different insignia(and were of officer grade).

Hmm, considdering the slightly different buttonholes and different materials used, would they realy have been a pair originaly? I know you see all kinds of materials used, but wouldn't a matched pair been the same?

Not necessarily..you see all types of backing on shoulder boards, that was never a concern for producers tasked to make literally millions of them, only for collectors.
Some shoulder boards were even outsourced to home makers, where they were collected on a weekly basis.Who's to say that one board was not made at the factory, and the other at Frau Mullers home, only being paired when they were collected for use by the LBA?

I agree completely, Doug. I have actually seen this on uniforms. It is not like people are going to be looking at the underlay of these boards(which I assume to be from a Fliegerbluse, because of the rough wool-a field uniform) during an inspection. I feel that these are definitely a "matching" pair worn by the same person on the same tunic, as the obverses are clearly the same.
