Hey Guys, I bought this portepee a couple of days ago from a dealer, being under the impression it was a bullion one! When I received it, it turned out to be a so called "ersatz" type?? I have seen many of these in the form of Navy portepee`s, but NEVER in the form of either Army or Luft? Did they exsist for army and Luft, and is this what they would`ve looked like? Many thanks in advance for any info you could provide. Cheers, Dion

Dion,
I have seen these before and I agree with Houston that they are a legitimate variaton. You will sometimes see the crown sewn together, as in this example, rather than simply being glued down. You will also sometimes see the loosely woven stem and slider like this one.
They are a little disconcerting when you see one for the first time though as they do display some of the classic red flags for fakes.

I cannot believe how knots have skyrocketed over the past couple years. Certainly we've seen a discernable climb in collectible TR over the long continuum. Certain articles jumped quickly, others followed the gradual climb. But knots, pound for pound have gone nuts. Only about 3 or 4 years ago, a super nice army saber knot was selling for less than $20. Now, i've been seeing nice ones go for between $50-$85. Just for a saber knot good+ condition. The minty ones are even higher. These aren't SS knots, just plain old portepees. It's crazy. I'm glad I got all mine when I did. I can't afford to deck out all my sabers. I'd need to buy another 20 or so. That would be probably cost nearly $1000-$1300is.

Along with the rise in prices for these accouterments, fakes have become rampant. You can see Pakastani made reproductions on ebay constantly and somebody is buying them. To compound the problem the older reproductions that Tom Johnson had made now have some age on them and people are being fooled by these as well.

On Johnson's site, he sells reproduction army saber knots. He doesn't have photos of them on his site however. I requested a photo from him sometime ago but never got a response. If anyone has a repro army saber knot, from Johnson or otherwise, could you please post if for reference?
Thanks
