With I think "late" being a relative term - with (as near as I have been able to determine) early 1942 being the probable termination date for dress bayonet production.
That said, I understand the concept of tightening the fit of a crossguard opening to the blade by peening. But what is that green stuff?? Some kind of filler or shim material?
