I notice there is not much activity so about time too add something new. Some of you have seen the piece I picked up while at the SOS, and some of you have not. James, This must be the piece that Gary told me about ..? a beauty by any standards!  I see lots of interesting things to look at on this set-up. That's a neat motif on the pommel cap, unusual and the shape of the clamshell is very interesting, too. If you could post some extra snaps it'd be a treat to see. I was lucky enough to handle this piece and it was easily the best in the show, a magnificent hirschf�nger in all respects, to have the original skinner in damascus is a great bonus, so often we see these small knives missing.Does it get much better, I don't think so, thanks for posting James a pleasure to see it again.

Bill, Thanks. They sure do look better than just reducing to fit the webb. So everyone knows, Jim Brown (damast) was nice enough to point out that the damascus pattern is period acid etched, but not actually Damascus steel. Do any of you collectors have any that are actually Damascus steel? How about you Houston? Maybe a good goal to find one for 2008?? Now, lets see some other pieces from collections. That is what makes the hobby worthwhile. Thanks, James

Here ya go. I believe the scabbard is ray skin. I wish the blade was real damascus, but it's only a plain blade and very heavy. I wish one day to make it to one of the big shows, sure sounds like fun with a lot of nice stuff to find. Thanks

Gents, All three are great looking pieces, a veritable feast for the eyes!  Mikee, that's got to be the first rayskin scabbard I've ever seen on a Sauf�nger, very cool and truly a sight to behold! Bill Ps Ralph, do you have any ray or sharkskin-type scabbards that you could let us have a peek at?

The coat of arms on the clamshell is from the Von Osten-Sacken family though from what branch of that family I'm still researching.

These are all from the Imperial period, probably a range from 1880 up to 1910.
