Just a few thoughts on photos. I agree with Jim M that if a degen was used as a photo prop, one would not put on the hanger. I think one reason that photos of the degen without runes are so rare is that the SS Officers who did not recieve the honor degen may have been a little embarrassed and covered the grip with their hand.
