At any time, many of the k98's that are found on ebay have post war re-issued seriel numbers. Most are non matching but i have seen a few lately that had matching seriels. (the german seriels not the post war seriels) My question is this.. if it is still matching but has post war seriels how would this affect the value? I don't remember this question being addressed before and am curious to other members opinions.

Hello, when You will all variants of 98k bayonets, then You should have one of the reworks, but for a only german collector its normal german production important, it should be matched, but many times,it could be not aquired. Could You send us details, markings from Your piece? I assume it is a yugoslavian rework. best regards,Andy

For most "collectors" a post war rework has only negligible value compared to the same piece without the post war seriels or other reqworks. If you are not bothered by this it is an excellent way to collect the various marks and years of the 84/98 without breaking the bank

I agree with this, it dramatically affects value for most collectors I know...
Any post war alteration, rework or additional marking, acceptance or serialing dramatically affects value. (the fact most post war bayonets got a re-blue or worse doesnt help either, - personally I have seen very few post war foreign used bayonets that didnt some fixin done to it, primarily metal finish/re-blue)

Thanks for the replies. Although i've seen plenty i haven't bought one, but may get one if the price is right just to add one as a variation to my collection.

Its only my opinion but if you are to collect the 84/98 then you really need example of th epost war use, Czech, Yugo, Israeli Norwegian, etc. as they are all as much a part of the types history as the German use. I have tried to get examples of all variations including re used, anythig else is incomplete. After the CHillean one i have heard of and the one modified for the SMLE rifle for Austrian use then the collection is complete except for the few still missing makers marks and they wil come

Andrew, I would agree to all the above statements by the Guys. I will go a little further and say that in my book, a common matching post-war K98 re-do bayonet maxes out at about $50-$60.00 (U.S.) in todays market. With most of these going to non-collector re-enactors. Of course, a matching bayonet that has a very rare marking will be worth more than my $60.00 quote but even then, many purists may not be interested (any speculations as to what a matching, re-do, blued {yikes!} '45 would go for?). So, that being said, I don't feel that a post-war K98 bayonet is a good investment nor is it a good representative of the original state of these bayonets. But, as it's been said, these bayonets are a legitimate part of World history. Hope this helps!---Jeff Bernish

I agree with Jeff. I think a post war rework has a low collecting value, $50 maximum, and less if there is after war reserialing. As John says, the most important is CONDITION, and after war rework just simply remove all original condition. I don't have any rework and I'll never have, unless, as said Jeff, an exceptionnal marking or a damn rare one.
If it's '44 dated, I need it!
