Semi chrome is a tricky cleaner to use. It is abrasive, so if you rub over the rust spot too much, it will remove the cross graining, and make a shiny spot around the rust spot. The spot where the rust was, will remain dark. It's almost better to try various methods on a beater, broken blade to see if you like the results. Otherwise, just stop the rust with an application of museum curator's wax.

Start with the least abrasive substance. Semi chrome is good, but it can do the damage described, if rubbed too hard for too long. If the rust has penetrated the metal, there will be one or more pits. Short of grinding or another abrasive method, there's nothing that can be done about that. I have had some luck using bronze wool. It is softer than steel wool and does not tend to polish the metal unless a great deal of pressure is used. I would put a liquid or paste metal cleaner on the spot and use a soft cloth or Q-tip to work with, being very gentle. If that doesn't do it, you can go to the bronze wool, leaving the cleaner on the blade to prevent too much friction. It really takes experimentation because rust and its damage can vary.

Get yourself a heavy guage piece of copper wire the same guage as used in electric company electric lines 4 to 6 inches long. Whatever you feel comfortable working with File the tip on one side until you have a nice sharp edge and remove the surface rust with it. Resharpen if it gets dull, use a file handle for the wire grip. The copper is softer than the steel but can leave marks if you get to rowdy with it. Then try the semicrome if needed. The rust does leave a stain if it is a large spot. Metal will polish metal. That is how the ancients burnished gold and silver. Steve
