I am looking for information on Dagger sheaths and cross guards.

Sheaths and Cross Guards: Does anyone have a list of makers of sheaths and cross guards? Also, how often were they made by the blade makers or were they more often outsourced?

Thank you

Hi Aaron, You came to the right place at GDC! Lots of like-minded collectors who are here to help a fellow serious collector.

Gross Guards - Tom Wittmann's "SS Book" has a listing of the 'usual' makers found with Maker's Marked SS Daggers. (It is a MUST HAVE, for a serious collector.)

Sheaths (?) - I am unaware of a listing of sheath makers, but one may certainly exist.

Best Wishes ..... Dave/dblmed

Even the largest Solingen makers outsourced for some items when it was not worth their effort or the capital investment to acquire the specialized equipment needed to manufacture the item. For the many smaller businesses making (or finishing) blades logic would dictate that: The smaller the business. The more parts they purchased from others.

I think that especially the zinc crossguards tend to fall into this category because of the pressure die casting molds and equipment. And probably the scabbards as well because of the specialized equipment needed. Although I dont rule out the possibility of some of the larger makers having their own machinery and/or selling scabbards/components to smaller makers. Although its also true, that a couple of the larger Solingen makers did unquestionably use subcontracted scabbards when they (presumably) had no other options. FP
