Hi
I'm sorry I keep on starting new threads - but I haven't got much of a clue when it comes to SS helmets.
This one should be good though - at least there's an expertise on the helmet saying it's ok.
What do you think?
Thanks
Jesper

First decal is definately bad repro runes and bad NS shield. The second helmet's decal looks bad to me as well for several reasons. You need to get a copy of Kelly Hicks' book SS Steel.

Jesper,
As Bryan and Mike have stated, both helmets are bad. A reference library is definitely a must for collectors these days. For SS helmets, Kelly's "SS Steel" is the one to get. It will save you a lot of money and grief and help you to weed out the obvious fakes.
Cheers,
Darryl

For starters - http://www.bender-publishing.com/and, a search of Forum archives will generate many results displaying genuine SS helmets. Cody

The noted publications are a must, and as much hands-on experience as you can get. The first helmet screams fake! When you have the real deal in your hand it talks to you.

Hi Darryl (and all others who are so nice to answer all my questions). I guess that what I can do is either: 1. Buy a couple of books and start searching for the needle in the heystack 2. Buy an expensive helmet and make my wife angry 3. Buy a copy helmet and be happy with the price 4. Buy an ordinary steel helmet, use my money on an SS cap and tell the wife to bugger off I'll probably go for solution #4 Thanks guys !!! Jesper

Unless you buy a nice pre-war "blackie"! Cheers,

Jesper,
I would go for option #1...they are out there. You just have to be patient and wait.
Cheers,
Darryl

I will - but I'll probably start out with this (just to have something here) http://www.militaria321.com/auktionsdetails.cfm?auctionID=5236810But who knows. I have a honour ring with QUALIFIED expertise coming home - so I guess my purchase will depend on what I get for this. Jesper
