Found this one in a military antiques shop. Left it there for now. Need opinions. Also, if real, a ballpark estimate on value would be nice too.

It's not a fantasy piece. It's either a real SS flag bearer's gorget or an excellent copy.

Stephen,,,, I would think by now you would have had many many private e-mails regarding this SS-Gorget, maybe you can tell us what you paid for it after you bought the item then we can all be envious,,, Stephen Big Grin

I am quite sure this is a real gorget. The market price is very high for such a thing, thats for sure.

The SS had a gorget like that but this is not one of them.It is a fake .Wittmann has the only original complete one that I have seen for sale in the last year.Check it out .One will see 25 chained SS daggers for sale to every one SS gorget like that.I would love to have one but cannot afford $15,000.00 for it. Eek

Hi

I have to agree that it is a copy. You look at the example on wittmans webpage , he has one listed. The eagle body is way different than this example. The body of the eagle is alot fatter on the example at the antique shop. But I would stay away from it. If you want a expert opinion email Wittman the pictures, and see what his opinion on it. Thanks for all the info guys. I didn't mean to mislead anyone with the photo quality or anything. You just have to make your pic so small to post it. I think I'll pass, however, if anyone wants the guys number to contact him for maybe better (emailed) photos, lemme know.

BTW, I have heard that Distlehorst's website also contains some occasional stinkers, be they inadvertant or not. He still has a large number of good things though.

Hey Ed. Yes, it is the very store that you speak of. The one that just moved one door North. Whenever I have a little time to kill near the airport, I'll stumble in and take a look around. You are "right on" when you mention the level of less than bonified items he has there, but, we shoot very straight with one another. Much of the stuff he doesn't sell as "real", at least not to me. He knows that I know helmets and doesn't try to pass anything off on me. I think he was just as curious about this one as I was. He's actually a really nice guy. He's got some really nice original African masks there which I also collect. Albiet I don't spend the $$$ to collect originals. Imitation masks are just fine. I'll spend the big bucks on TR stuff.

Ed let me know where you are at. Miami, Ft. Lauderdale etc.? Send me an e-mail at [email protected]. Maybe we can get togther some time. Erik of Norway and I already do, up in WPB.

I dont know what that shop looks like now...but in 1990 there were pieces dating all the way back to 1946 Big Grin.A couple volumes of books could have been written on those pieces in that shop. The last time I went in there was probably mid to late 90s and there wasnt much in there anymore.I am sure there were some Big Grin good pieces if you dug around.Alot of neat(and odd) stuff though. Is that "Howdy Doody" ventriliquist dummy still there? If you have seen it you know the one I am talking about.

No, it appears as though Howdy-Doody has left the building. You're right though. The place is a little like a grandparents attic. You dig around for a while and you're lible to find a few interesting things.

I found a 3 piece Luftschutz with a really good un-denazified decal on it which I bought to add a little diversity to my battle helmet line-up. And recently, on this last trip, I bought a M35 DD Heer field reissued overpaint (grey) since he hadn't upped the price in 2 years. Honest helmet. Why not.

Okay. Thanks guys! Appreciate the help!
