As much as I think the blade is good, I am not so convinced about the staghorn. I think it's new and from the photos, I think there is heavy evidence of the plating being damaged by tooling and filing the staghorn.

Therefore, my verdict is that it's an original blade, but the grips were replaced with new staghorn and filed to fool.

Yes i was not very happy with it when i got it home and took a closer look.

I'm not crazy about the fit of the stag grips to the hilt. Notice on the obverse that the grip plate is fitted poorly, something I doubt would have happened on an extra cost option like stag grips. The rivets also don't look kosher either. Jan's point about the tooling is valid as well. If such things bother you, as they would most collectors, I'd try to return it.

You'll need better pictures for a better reading on your bayonet

I don't know if these photos help but here are a few I think real ones. Well there is one that has wood grips that are carved like stag. Well a little like stag.

Would you think the posted hilt looks like 3R production? If so, it would be tough to figure as a sawback, right? I know there were some Weimar sawbacks that were non Feuerwehr pieces but I've never seen a 3R sawback that wasn't a Feuerwehr sawback. The rivet reverses look off to me, at least from the pics.

Maybe it's the angle of the pictures, but doesn't it look like the rivets are offset, like Pack ones are?

If so, they sure aren't Pack spanner bolts, are they? And I don't know of anyone else who had the offset spanner bolts.

Dous staghorn shrink with age gents??

These grips look very much like recently installed staghorn from India to me from the photographs. They appear to be the type of grips seen on reproduction police bayonets I am afraid.

I take back my comment on the offset grip bolts... the poor fit of the grip plates makes me want to run away really fast.

The stag grips I have seen looked like they were very carefully and painstakingly fitted to the rest of the hilt.

This does not.

No, stag horn will not shrink with age. But I have seen some cracked ones, not sure because of age or impact. Can anyone input on this ?

The above pictures show how some makers riveted there grips. The first set shows how both sides look to be domed, nice touch. The other two sets are more convential.

TK i take it that these rivets were made out of mild steel and not somthing harder.Then inserted with a punch and dolly on other side.By hand??

Me working as an aircraft fitter i have inserted thousends of rivets.Some times i do not have the domed head punch to fit over the the domed head rivet head.So therefore it is dolly to dolly.Exepted in process if you are skilled in mech eng craft studies like i am.
there for could my bayo rivets be a 100 off at differant times of the year when tooling is not always there????

I will add just one moor point about the rivets on my bayonet.
Even though you members dont like them and let me say you have a bit convinced me and i will agree with you but like i say there is always a but.
These rivets have been inserted with quite a steady hand .I know sean worse at work.Look at the double dolly marks front and back.
Also look at file marks not uncommen on original bayos on stag horn.
If you look a bit closser they are in differant angles so therfore no way have they have been done at the same time??

I am still not convinced that the staghorn is original to the piece. The blade seems ok, but the grips do not. The rivets may not be the only way to tell a new staghorn apart from the old, but I would focus more on what seems to be the tooling marks left behind on the plating. This to me would be a far more important indicator along with the unusually light color of the stag on the photos. All in all, I am still not convinced.

I will refresh this thread.
First the file marks or as stated tooling marks are not consistant to grips and body of the knife.Diffo directions.Therfore the grips and filing are not done at the same time.
I have looked at a lot of top dealers sites and the rivets and colour of grips do not ring alarm bells for me.
Gents any moor thoughts on this subject

I don't think there should be any file marks at all. I don't think the grips were fited with them attached and the hilt plated. I have several stag grip bayonets and none have file marks.

I have just been looking at some top dealer sites on stag grips and also looking hard at various rivet configerations.
Some bayos do exibit slight file marks on the top of the grips.
They must be selling fakes or mock ups then are they?????
Are people allowed to post pics from dealers websites on a public forum or dous copyright come into this????

I think that most of us agree there is something definitely wrong with the piece you are posting here. Please ask the dealer you wish to use pictures of or at a minimum quote them as the source. I have yet to see a dress bayonet with file marks that would be normal to the piece. I definitely want to see a picture of the bayonets you are referring to. Thanks.
