Here is another portrait photo I added to my collection recently. It shows a young SS1 "Deutschland" VT soldier wearing an M35 DD helmet. One interesting feature of his helmet is the fact that it is painted in a very matte grey-black colour, which you sometimes see. Another feature of even greater interest is the wear to the top of his helmet. It just goes to show that these helmets were not always in pristine condition...even back then.

Cheers,

Possibly some scraping/buffing to his helmet?
Rare picture.

Hey Darryl, the runes on this decal look extra narrow. Is it just a trick of light, or are they actually a bit more narrow than most?

Nice photo by the way.

Darryl, top photo! What size is the photo? Tim.

While I can't be 100 per cent certain (in reply to Stephan Wahl's question), I believe the comination of the angle at which the helmet was in relation to the lens, plus the "glow" from the background of the shield combine to make the runes appear narrower.

Gentlemen,

Many thanks for the comments. To answer a few questions which have been asked...the photo is about half the size it appears on the computer screen and yes, Mike, that is correct regarding Stephan's question. This phenomenon has been discussed many times before here on the forum, ad nauseum. In old B&W photos the silver shield tended to "blossom" thereby making the runes appear much smaller and thinner than they really are.

Here is another photo (not mine) that I came across on the internet. It shows an SS-TV soldier with an M35 whose paint and runes decal have seen better days. Certainly not in "parade condition" in my opinion.

Cheers,

Marc,

That expression is used in the states and I would assume other English speaking countries.
