I also would prefer this to be period, Ivan.
But unfortunately, there are too many indications against it in my opinion:
- Ed W�sthof only used one maker mark on all of his ricasso knifes (see picture in attachement)
- the motto on this knife is also quite different from the one W�sthof used on his early knifes.
Also, why would anyone engrave a W�sthof fork and D.R.G.M. if it is not with the intenteion to mislead?
Today embellishers are not using the swastica's anymore, because they know that it makes the "work" suspicious...
Most collectors do not know that this is a rare hilt. On the contrary, they believe it is not "textbook" and it makes them hesitate about these knifes. I bought some of my early Pack's for a ridiculoos price for that reason.
On the other hand, the Pack early hilts are the only ones that permit an easy change of the sharpened blade without breaking the rivets. I have seen several ones with switched blades.
