Ivan,

Only seen the D.R.G.M. on WW1 fighting knifes but not on hj knifes until now on yours.

Best Scott.

Hello Ivan,

The hilt of this HJ is clearly a very early original by Pack.

But I do not like the blade:

- the Ed Wsthof mark is not the correct one.

- the crossgrain looks likes scratches made into the blade surface, we see this on many reproductions.

- the complete engraving :figure, text, makermark and DRGM mark, seems very amateuristically applied.

Is there a scabbard?

Best regards,

Herman

Hi Herman
Well, you're probably right on the crossgrain, but why do you think, that Wsthof mark is not correct?
The scabbard is anodized.

Hello Ivan,

Yes, the one you show now is correct: stamped and with the name.
Just compare with the other one: the space between the arrow points should be limited (they must almost touch) and the stick of the fork should be longer + the wrong mark appears to be engraved in the same amateuristic style as the figure and the text: one of the arrow points did not succeed well.

The scabbard is a nice early one that fits 100% with the early Pack hilt.

Best regrads,

Herman

Another problem I see is the way the blade fits into the hilt, improper angle IMO

I agree. Removal of the spanner bolts will tell all IMO.

It will be interesting to see what this turns out to be. I like it.

The work on the blade seems real and period to me. Not the usual overdone stuff that fakers seem to love. No flaming swastikas or SS runes or Nazi banners or similar. Certainly not done professionally by a jeweler or master engraver, but then, this is a teenager's knife, not a serious presentation piece. Maybe his father or uncle was a metalworker or something similar. The 'crossgrain" is really just scratches ... but that seems over the artwork so maybe a later cleanup by an uninformed amateur.

Thanks guys
I bought this knife from lady directly from Germany.
And was not expensive,so i don't think this is the fake.
Why would someone put fake blade to the very rare grip?
IMO,this is real knife.

I also would prefer this to be period, Ivan.

But unfortunately, there are too many indications against it in my opinion:

- Ed Wsthof only used one maker mark on all of his ricasso knifes (see picture in attachement)

- the motto on this knife is also quite different from the one Wsthof used on his early knifes.

Also, why would anyone engrave a Wsthof fork and D.R.G.M. if it is not with the intenteion to mislead?

Today embellishers are not using the swastica's anymore, because they know that it makes the "work" suspicious...

Most collectors do not know that this is a rare hilt. On the contrary, they believe it is not "textbook" and it makes them hesitate about these knifes. I bought some of my early Pack's for a ridiculoos price for that reason.

On the other hand, the Pack early hilts are the only ones that permit an easy change of the sharpened blade without breaking the rivets. I have seen several ones with switched blades.

Best regards,

Herman
