The official German regulations regarding army daggers of General ranked personal it only refers to the hanger having gold coloured fittings instead of the standard silver.
In that official published regulation there is absolute no talk about a Generals dagger , only its hanger.

About the shown dagger with gold plated fittings i dont believe it has anything to do with an original plated period dagger.
I have seen a couple more along the way but none convinced me of being a generals dagger, plating and wear aint so hard to make.

Stating this is an original period plated general dagger is more a leap of faith.
More likely its a base copper coating, just to create a better underground for the final silverwash, as these potmetal fittings are known to eat the silverwash.

But thats only my opinion, everyone is aloud having its own.

A puzzle that may never be solved, to everyone's liking.
After all, there were a lot of German General's, where are all the daggers.
Same with the so called Luftwaffe Funeral daggers.
I could not come close to guessing the number of Luftwaffe funerals there were, probably several every day.

You are right about the generals. If you include Admirals and Oberfuhrers and Gruppenfuhrers of the NSKK/SA/SS, plus the big knobs at the RAD, NSFK, etc, etc, there must be thousands of them. The only specifically designed general's general's edged weapon I have heard of is the Lufwaffe general's sword. You could probably add the Damascus SS Honor Swords as well, but those were special gifts.

Hello, I can only emphasize what Gerrit1963 did write, imho the statement is 100% correct. The dagger in question with all it´s oddities looks to me like somebody has tried out his home galvnic tool.

Well Ryan that is pretty easy, you can see the pitting BELOW the gold, so that for sure has been done after the blade left the factory.
Someone tried to upgrade this one, i have no doubts about that.

Dont need to have it in hand to see that the gilding on the logo was done way after the blade has had its corrosion-pitting.

again Ger my point was this and only this Paul posted the dagger here and solicited "opinions" Paul is a very experienced dealer/collector who has handled thousands of daggers He is highly regarded both here and elsewhere...... I merely would have thought that perhaps he saw "something" in this dagger that perhaps could possibly lead to it having "potential" I would have thought had he no doubts concerning it being post war or a complete fabrication he might not have requested opinions. I was with Tom Johnson when we bought this dagger. It came from the estate of a son of an Army Office stationed in Germany in the 1950s. While it is controversial, Tom and I thought it was good.
