Let me start buy stating what I know (very little) & what I do not know (a lot) about these items.....

I have no idea how these plaques were awarded, (if they are indeed awards or just commemorative plaques), whether they were given to all the fighters & their support/seconds etc or just the fighters themselves. I do not even know whether they were given to both sides or only the winners???

What I do know is that they are tough to find, which could be to do with how many were given out, or because they appeal to not only TR collectors like us, but also sport/boxing collectors. They were NOT given in presentation cases, just in a simple paper bag with the manufacturers details (which is Aurich, I'll show one later), so if you find one in a box or case, then they have been put together at some point, either by a previous owner or an unscrupulous seller....

Programs & postcards/envelopes with special cancellations exist for the fights, however, while I have seen images of the programs, I have never managed to find any for sale.... The postcards/envelopes can be found on various Philately types sites.

There are also a small number of badges available, as rare as the plaques, if not rarer. I assume that there were badges for all the fights where plaques were awarded, however I have only seen ones for a couple of them. I will cover them in more detail later....

From the ones that I have seen, the plaques come in three colours; Red enamel for the Amateur Box-Meisterschaften, White enamel for international bouts, Blue enamel for Box-Landerkampf before mid 1941, & Black painted for late 1941 onwards. Plus there is a totally different painted design for the "Kriegs-Europa Meisterschaften im Boxen 1942". Except for this last one, all of the plaques are 8cm/3inches in diameter.

So, to start Amateur Box-Meisterschaften.

I Know of three: Essen 1939, Stettin - Königsberg 1940, Görlitz-Breslau-Liegnitz 1941.

I do not yet have the Essen, hopefully Bill will be kind enough to show his one. I can tell you that the Essen fight was staged 21st & 22nd March at Städt Saalbau & 24th & 25th March 1939 at Kunsteisbahn Essen. However I do have one of the badges. As you can see, they are the same as the palques, but not enamelled. They measure 3.5cm/1.5 inches.

Stettin - Königsberg 1940. I've no idea when the fight took place; To save space I will only show one reverse as they are all pretty much the same.

I know of 7 versions of the white enamel plaques. Deutschland-England 2.7.38, Deutschland-Italien 17.7.38, Deutschland-Polan 13.11.38, Deutschland-Finnland, Königsberg 20.1.39, Deutschland-Schweden, Hamburg 28.1.39, Deutschland-Dänemark, Berlin 3.12.39 & Deutschland-Ungarn, Breslau 11.2.40. However there could be more....

I have never been able to obtain the Deutschland-England plaque, but have seen them. There are small hollow back tinnie type badges for this fight (& the Deutschland-Italien), & I have seen but was unable to obtain a solid back version of the England badge which was marked to Aurich. I assume, but have seen no evidence that the tinnie type to sold to the audience & the solid version was for whatever the other badges that match the plaques were for.

Here are my tinnie types for the England & Italien fights....

I must add an apology here, In my post regarding the Amateur Box-Meisterschaften I said that I knew of 3 versions, that is wrong I know of 4 versions. I missed Magdeburg-Hannover 1942.... I don't have the plaque but I do have the badge....

Blue Box-Landerkampf plaques; I know of 4 versions of these, Deutschland-Italien, Berlin 25.2.40, Deutschland-Finnland, Passau 8.2.41, Deutschland-Schweden, Königsberg/Pr 30.3.41 & Deutschland-Ungarn, Magdeburg 6.7.41. I have never seen badges for these, but that is not to say that there aren't any.

I have 3, the Italien, Finnland & Schweden.

I seems that after mid 1941 the use of enamel stopped & instead the plaques were painted with black paint. I only know of these two, a Box-Landerkampf for Deutschland-Dänemark, München 22.11.41 & a DreiLänderkampf im Boxen, Deutschland-Italien-Ungarn, Berlin 4-6.12.42. Again, not seen any badges. I have seen postage cancellation stamps for the DreiLänderkampf.

I mentioned in my first post that these plaques came in paper bags. As you can imagine few of these have survived. Here is one of mine;

Finally the "Kriegs-Europa Meisterschaften im Boxen 1942". I've never been able to obatain the plaque for this, but I will show an image of one taken from an online auction site a number of years ago for reference. I was lucky enough to find the badge earlier this year... As with the others, marked to Aurich...

Don, you continue to find and show things we never knew existed.

Many thanks, again,

Don, Beautiful items. As Dave said, you find and show items ,many of which I’ve never seen either. You have some fantastic collection. I have only been lucky enough to find the two boxing plaques that I showed in the other thread. I have seen a few of the smaller badges like you show and the tinnies like you show but have never acquired any of them. I was shocked to see the prices on the small badges.
I also had no idea that the colors depicted on the plaques had any particular meaning so that bit of information is great. I’m surprised that being as beautiful and well made as these plaques are that they did not have a case but rather a simple paper bag. I’ve attached a picture of my Essen plaque as I showed in the previous thread.
I’ve don’t think I’ve seen any of the white colored plaques before & there was a blue one for sale a few years ago, I forget for which bout, but I was outbid on it.
I have a bunch of the old Manion’s catalog and I’m sure I’ve seen the "Kriegs-Europa Meisterschaften im Boxen 1942" plaques you show on auction there a few times for sale.
I think these are some of the sharpest looking plaques and badges I’ve seen, particularly like the blue one’s. Thanks so much for showing these Don. It’s always nice to see the stuff you have. If you ever get tired of any of them and care to get rid of a few of these plaques, let me know. Again, just beautiful items you have & thanks for showing them.
Bill

The only other thing I can add is a picture I found online of what would be the white Deutschland- Polen event. Don, you mentioned that these are also popular with sports/boxing enthusiasts. The dealer I bought my 2nd plaque from dealt mostly in sporting collectibles. I hope he comes across another one sometime. Again, thanks for posting this thread

Thank you for your kind words Gentlemen.

Thank you for posting your Essen plaque & the Polen program Bill. A relic Polen piece was shown on WAF sometime ago by a chap from Poland who didn't know what it was. I wrote to him regarding it but he never replied. Here is the photo he posted.

Also I will add here that fakes do exist of these but to anyone who has seen even a photo of an original would not be fooled by them....

Thanks for that pic of the Polen piece Don. I think I remember seeing this on WAF also. Shame it's in such bad shape

1938,,,,Poland and Germany together in boxing games.. Thats really something considering how many in the nazi leadership hated Poland and had already plans to invade her...

ALL these badges in my 40+ years of collecting I have to say have never seen one of them! Even at the big shows....Maybe I just didn't notice them. But I think I would have noticed a couple if seen..
Bill,,Don,,glad you've held on to them. All of us long time or serious collectors have a few real special items.. Too bad there isn't serious museum that we can leave the pieces of history we have for future generations..........

This is an outstanding informative thread. Interesting subject matter.

Does anyone have other examples to share?

Sorry to say I only had those two pieces but agree this was an informative and interesting thread. I don't think too much can be found on the net about these items so I'm glad Don was able to supply all that information & hope others may add info or their items as Joe has said.

This link to the Deutsches Boxmuseum lists some of the period amateur boxing events.

http://www.deutsches-boxmuseum.de/kampftag.htm#1930

--------------------------

I wonder, would there have been individual event medals given? listing the event and weight class? Or, gold, silver, and bronze. I recall seeing some Boxing medals. A long, long time ago.

--------------------------

If you search, European Amateur Boxing Championship (by the year you are interested in, for example - 1937, some info can be found.

I am surprised this thread has not received more interest. Kind of a rare subject matter. You don't see badges like this every day.
Where are all the sports (boxing ) enthusiasts?

I tried a translator but not sure something wasn't lost in translation.

I recently had the opportunity to add this piece to my collection. Not German I'm afraid but Italien, although, in my defence it does have a Swastika on it, albeit a tiny one....

Despite all of the flags around the circumference it seems that the only countries involved were Italy, Hungary & Germany who boxed as part of the Mitropa Cup competition (which name confusingly was also used for a football/soccer cup!).

Nicely marked to the reverse to Milan manufacturer E.E. Bertoni & fitted with a nice safety catch assembly.

Don, it's a colorful and puzzling piece.

1920 is a very early depiction for a party flag. (I had to look that up). shocked

I see a Nisshōki or Hinomaru Japanese flag. Until the spring of 1920 there were still German POW's in Japan from the siege of Tsingtau. (Wouldn't there have been politics involved)?

You've fallen into the common trap regarding the Roman numerals Joe grin. Whilst XX in Roman numerals is indeed 20, under the Italian Fascist Calendar it is 1942 (October 28th 1941 to October 27th 1942, Anno 20 - XX to be precise).

Year 1 (Anno I) began on October 28th 1922 & ran until to October 27th 1923. So the date on the badge is 1st - 8th June 1942. grin

"Well that's all folks! Anyone have others to share?" Don't think we'll see much more on these really rare pieces! You seem have them all anyway! laugh wink

At the big shows you gotta really search for pieces like this.. It can be hard.. Small pieces some of them,,some dealers cases are stuffed end to end , top to bottom!,, which is good.. But you really gotta check those corners grin
At the big shows you got to tune everything else out and concentrate, know your stuff, and hopefully after a whole day searching, you'll find such a piece in this subject area... The Italian marked pieces [with glove and Axis flags] is especially nice... Does it even appear in any references?? - Well however and wherever your searching for your pieces keep at it because it's working beautifully!

- are all great pieces you found Don,,, Congrats..

Thanks Don.
shocked Me, meandering off in the wrong direction is nothing new.
I should have known with the three Axis powers flags together.

Thank you for your kind words. You are indeed correct, it is getting harder & harder to find these little pieces & over the years I have spent many hours hunting for something different or rare. We don't have the big shows over here so I have to rely on my skills with the internet & the friends & contacts I have aquired over the years. It takes time but the hunt is fun....
