Hi all - I picked these up from the same seller. The top one I think is aluminum; the other all magnetic and heavy. They look good to me, but I'd appreciate any thoughts you may have on them.
Would the lightweight one have been made in the 1930's, and the other earlier?
I don't know if I've seen a catch like this before.

Believe it or not, I think that being able to identify good from bad Verwundeten Abzeichnung
would be a minor miracle of sorts. Somehow I feel that these may have been one of the most inexpensive and widely-reproduced German badges there is, nothing exact, but just a hunch..?
It would be great if one of our collecting friends would enlighten us all on these WWI/Weimar pieces. I have a black one around here somewhere I'll photograph and post additionally. I'd imagine the pin assemblies and catches are what will tell us the most..?
I hope some of the gents from the medals forum can pitch in and lend us a hand? Anyway, we'll give 'er a go, eh?

There are 5 different types of these WW1 badges, and all have different measurements, weights and could be made from different materials!.. For me when in steel,,if the detail is there and its a good heavy gage steel its fine.
All the badges here seem to be either type 2 or type 3,,a little hard to tell from photos. The measurements on the 2 types are pretty close. Biggest difference [according to Hamelman's WB book] would be in the width of the bow,,type 2 = 10.20 and type 3= 9.20...,G.

Magnetic, some rust shows here and there. A spot of brazing on the round wire C shape catch.
(Detail is sharper than the images show. My scanner has an aversion to some of my attempts).
Gaspare, does the shape of the helmet factor in on the different types?
We are refering to issue badges, correct?

I wonder if any of the plainer pin back issue style were available as private purchase as opposed to the cut out options and the silver marked badges and the screw backs.
How is Hammelmans WB book in your opinion? Does it detail a way to differentiate between WWII period production? I seem to recall an L/ marked piece, but otherwise?

Joe, Hamelmans book is excellent. Covers ALL aspects of the badge from 1914 to 1957, even the infamous 'Chaplains' badge and the 20 July 1944 pieces. Really, everything, boxes, docs, pins, KM type and specs on all. Quick and right to the point, an easy read and more important written easy to remember!
Seems like these WW1 badges anything went. Cut outs, screw backs, silver / gold plating. If you had the money you could get whatever you wanted..
WW1 badges the variations are in - helmet shape/rivets,,pebbling,,swords and bows..
Joe,If the pebbling on yours is on the flat side it looks to be the type 3 badge. ,G.

Gaspare, I think the measurements you've quoted here are really just referring to random badges. I think the 5 examples on page 3 are just to show the range in size of the badge; they aren't meant to correspond with the 5 "Types" on page 4 & 5.

Hope this doesn't muddy the waters too much more, but here's my other two. Both from sellers I believe are honest and know their stuff.
Both with the simple, bent wire catch.
All magnetic except for the catch on the black one, which looks like brass. - Bob
