I am not really an "SA guy". I don't have a lot of experience with SA daggers. I have picked up a few in the past year, and I am wondering about one specific piece that I have. It is an early F. Herder marked dagger (crossed keys). I was wondering where it rates on the rarity scales. Anybody have any idea? My interest mostly lies with the darkside (SS daggers). Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

Rates a 4 out of 10 on the venerated McSarr scale.

A lot of times you see that maker with really great dark black grips..super heavy pieces..

They are beauties if the blade is nice. Very dark grips and among my personal favorites.

Keep it, you won't ever regret it if it's in exc++ condition.

You guys are right, it has a very dark grip and is quite heavy. The blade, grip, and cross guards are flawless. I don't own very many SA pieces, but have begun picking up more recently as an investment. I never really cared about rarity until recently. With a book coming out, the prices are already shooting up! I can't believe what these things are going for now. With "average condition" maker-marked Sa pieces going for $600+ now, I bet I could get $750 or more for this one (If I wanted to sell it now). This one is a keeper though. Looks great in my display case. I will pull it out and post some pictures when I get the time.

Here are some pics of the dagger. I really like this one. Nicest SA I have. I only have a handful of SA daggers, and never really gave them much respect over the years. For some reason, I am compelled to acquire more! I think it has to do with the fact that SS daggers have hit the ceiling, and SAs are headed there soon too! Very cool daggers, and still very affordable (at least for a little while)

100% cross grain, mint blade. Only light runner marks. Perfect grip with no cracks or chips. Come to think of it, I don't think I own ANY (blade) that look as nice (modern, collectible, or otherwise) Pretty cool considering this thing is 72 years old!

Krause, I'll take the dagger and the baby. Me and the wife had 5 rug rats and we miss them. How much for a package deal?

I need help collecting and that child is already studying maker marks!

Tiger- The baby is free to a good home, but the dagger will cost you! Big Grin Gotta start 'em young if we are going to get any new blood into this hobby! She seems to like the SA daggers best so far. She really likes the ASSO maker mark! Glad she likes them, as I seem to be getting into SAs more myself now. She is our last, over 11 years apart from our next! I had forgotten how much work these babies really are!
