Gentlemen,

I'm very pleased to show you the highlight of my collection. Smile I never thought that one day, I would be the caretaker of such a beautiful dagger as there's only a handful of these that are known to exist ( actually rarer than an SA Honor dagger ). The dagger was made by Master Damascus smith Paul Dinger and it has to be the highest form of artistic crafmanship.
The dagger is in a trully pristine condition, great patina and a blade to die for.
I couldn't be happier right now and I must thank Jason Burmeister for making this happening.
Wink

The tang is beautifully marked P+D, the initial of Mastersmith Paul Dinger.

Congradulations Pat!
I was lucky enough to handle another damascus army by the same maker awhile back and they are a sight to behold. I'm sure that's one you'll be displaying in the "out of scabbard" position. Any chance of getting a close up of the tang marking?
BTW: Is this one in "Mint" condition?? Big Grin Big Grin Wink

Now that is the highlight of anybodies collection, the rosebud / maidenhair damascus is a work of art. My congratulations Pat, the patina on this dagger has aged to perfection and compliments the blade very well indeed. Somebody knows how to use gloves when handling this kind of quality thank god,
We dont get to see these very often so thankyou for sharing, it will be the closest I ever get to one Frown.

An absolutely beautiful dagger. I don't recall ever handling one. It would be impossible to upgrade this one. The condition is pristine. I can't wait to see it in person.

Well Done Pat. I know you've been looking for one for quite a while.

I guess all you need now are the Luft and KM to go with it. Big Grin

Pat,
Please savor this dagger.
There are many of us who dream (as I am sure you did) of a piece like this.
The daggers that we collect have as their highest value, (IMO) the historical significance which they represent. However you now own a piece who's historical standing is eclipsed by the incredible craftsmanship and dedication of the period which has (sadly) long past.
This is a TRUE piece of history, not only German, but Human.
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!
Johnny

What a delight to behold, just beautiful....

I had the priviledge of owning a Fredricus marked damascus Army for a few years...really a great thing to hold and just admire.

Congrats, John

AWESOME dagger that we can ONLY admire Wink

I'd take a CLOSE UP picture of the wonderful curves on the blade and have a lot of large prints made.

I'm SURE a lot of us would like to buy a copy of this picture and hang it on the wall.

PURE ART Smile Smile Smile

Hey Pat, congrats on this beauty!

Just curious, which is dearer to you, this one or your near mint Himmler SS? Cool

Now that I'm really broke for the next few years, I'll sit back and enjoy my damascus blade. Wink My wife's new kitchen will have to wait for another era. Big Grin
Gustavo, in all honesty, both my Himmler and Damascus Army are my favorites and these will be the last daggers that I will ever sell..........if I do sell them. Razz

Hey I would get in line for the Himmler as well!

I like the idea of making photo-prints from close-up pics. of the demast. That could be very cool.

Congrats. again, AMAZING piece.

PS-When I mentioned in my previous post that this came from a "period which is (sadly) long past." I was referring to the craftsmanship, not the Nazis!
I re-read that this morning and realized that I worded it a bit WRONG! Eek Big Grin

A very fine piece Pat. IMO one of the most beautiful of all those produced during the Third Reich. My hat is off to you for stepping up and paying the price to own and enjoy this beauty. It is really kind of a collection in itself as it is worth the price of many daggers. Now all you need is a fine knot and hangers to go with it.

Off topic, but the mention of Pat's wife's new kitchen reminded me of the story of the little girl who aked her mummy 'where do babies come from?', well, said mummy, 'Mummy has an egg in her tummy and Daddy has a seed and when Daddie's seed meets Mummy's egg it makes a baby!
So the little girl asks 'well how doe's daddy's seed get into Mummy's tummy, does Mummy swallow it? Mum replies;

"Only when mummy wants a new kitchen" Wink

I bought my Damascus Army years ago for the horrible sum of $4500.00. Like John, mine is a Fedricus and I wish I had a Luftwaffe to go with it. Dinger did make nice Damascus.
Mine came second hand from the veteran, who was president of Western Illinois University and didn't understand it was more than just another Army Dagger, which is how he sold it to the guy I bought it from.

Manfred, "Vielen danke mein freund". Wink

In all honestly, it was a heartbroken decision for me as I had to sell my Knight's Cross in order to get this dagger.
I told to myself that I may never get another chance to own such a piece.
I talked to Houston and Ron Weinand about it couple of weeks ago and Ron told me that it took him 30 years before finding his Damascus Frediricus. As for Houston, he said that I just may never find one if I pass on this one.
After thinking it over for a while, I have decided to take the "plunge" and trade my KC ( plus some cash of course ) Big Grin and get it. Better have it now than never too late. Razz
I can always get another KC if I really wanted one, as they are not all that rare.
As it was suggested, I did get a nice set of deluxe army hangers with proper portepee.
Now, it is fully dressed up and ready to go to sleep in its case for the new millenium. Cool

Sehr nett, Patrice. Third Reich damast is scarce indeed. Great pictures.

John, I remember when you bought the Fridericus damast Army at the MAX, and never thought that you would ever part with it.

Pat,

Down right beautiful dagger and I think you made a good informed decision. A damascus blade IMO just can't be beat. Is their anything done differently when cleaning a damascus blade? Thanks for taking the time to show it off.

For posterity can we get a closeup shot of the tang w/initials w/out the buffer. Thanks again

what a superb piece! seeing it takes me back to 1990 when i owned an army fridericus by paul dinger, in fact it was stamped with his full name and damastschmeid on the tang. you can see it pictured in one of johnsons volumes as well as wittmans army dagger book,(my pic is the b&w one at the start of his damascus chapter) bought it from a picker in east palestine ,ohio, for $2000.00! the first time i walked it into the ovms show i had a major dealer owner of a then major auction house try to tell me the blade was reversed as the maker logo was on the obverse! the dagger now resides in new zealand i belive. you will enjoy many hours of just gazing at the damascus pattern from every angle and every lighting condition you can creat. have you bee nable to put it down yet? regards,,mike

Thank you gentlemen,

Michael, to be honest with you, I've been spending hours just looking at it.
Just letting my fingers caress the surface of the damascus blade, looking at it from different angle under the light.
A real treat to my senses, almost sensual. Big Grin

My Damascus Army by Dinger came from the WWII veteran who was president of Western Illinois University in the early 1980s and I was lucky enough to snag it from the owner who went to school there and his father bought it from the president for Christmas one year in the early 1970s. I worked on this one for years before I got it from him and they are rather special.
Mine is a Fidericus by Dinger and has a beautiful Ivory grip.
I remember seeing these from time to time at the early OVMS Shows in Norwood, OH. Never really thought they were that special at the time, but you never see them at shows much anymore. 2nd Lufts by Fidericus were available at that time and more common than the Army form, but those, too, have dissappeared.
