Hi All,
I have had this RAD mans hewer for some time now, I bought it at a Arms fair, it has no scabbard, it is maker marked Alcoso, it's very clean and the blade is polished also there is no RAD acceptance mark. The grips are very chunky and real stag antler. I'm not sure if it is solid or plated nickel the hilt and grip screws are non magnetic the blade is. The whole piece is very heavy and robustly assembled, the blade etching is fairly deep but dark background is polished out. My main concern is the Alcoso mark it seems maybe a bit untidy if that makes any sense? Anyway this dagger has bothered me for a long time and I would like to either consign to the repro/bad cabinet or keep trying to find a scabbard for it and display with my good pieces. Pictures aren't great but can try better ones of any particular details if required.
Regards, Andy.

I see there is still! a problem with missing text, I think a lot of folks are simply giving up trying to post anything at all after several failed attempts. something like this I would have thought will drive people away to other forums, there's not much to read! 86 views now and nothing!

Hi Seany,
I don't have a copy of that book but definitely will do soon, I'm actually in the process of building up a small library and that book is on my list. I thought it was a repro but couldn't find any photos of repro RAD enlisted hewers anywhere to compare. That puts this one to rest now and I suppose as a repro it will still have some value but not much but I think I'll keep it as it is very well made and displays well as what it is.
I only have a 1st edition restricted 1,000 copies of R. McFarlane's Bluebook of Identification of reproduction Nazi Edged Weapons for repro reference but this is only a small basic book and does not have the RAD mans hewer only the Officers.
Thank you very much for putting this straight for me.
Cheers, Andy.

Even though it was published decades ago, Fred Stephens' book is still an excellent reference & a good addition to one's reference library. There are several generations of fakes that have followed which are even harder to discern but it's impossible to have too much info on modern fakery.

Not having the book in hand, what jumps out is the chunkiness & color of the stag grips as well as that etched Alcoso mark. That maker mark often appears on older fakes of many dagger models & it should always be viewed with a large degree of scrutiny.

Fred Stephen's book is on the list as priority now, it was mostly the untidy and uneven trade mark that had me thinking it was not right plus the fact that it was etched not stamped but I'm not sure if that mark was ever etched anyway. I had next to no knowledge at all when I bought this dagger it was after I joined this forum that I started to question things more, joining this community is probably one of the best things I've done to better my understanding and knowledge of the hobby.
Many thanks, Andy.
