This walked into my house today. While selling my "59 El Camino, I mentioned my interest in German swords, daggers and guns. The guy paid for the '59 and said he'd be back. When he came back he brought this 460 Double Rifle by Suhl. His grandfather picked it up in Germany at the end of the war. I have no experience with this type of gun. Any ideas?
All my photos are too large, gotta resize them. Give me a few minutes.

If the double rifle is a 460, it probably takes the 461 Gibbs and good luck finding that ammo. The Germans and British both made the "big guns" for hunting big game. You see more of the British type than the German guns, but both are desirable. Find a cartridge to lay beside it and show your buddies you are ready for whatever comes your way. James

hi notaguru
what makes you think this double rifle exposed hammers is a 460 round is that what this guy said then prove him right this doesnt sound rightto me but if you take off the wooden for arm then remove the brls it should say calliber and probly kruppt brls underneath on the bottom of steel brls appears to be a german made rifle also some times the makers name is on top of the brls let us know what else you see like proof marks etc best of luck andy militarynut

Under the fore end one barrel has what I assume to be a serial #15519. The other barrel has a Crown/NI. The serial#15519 is also on the butt plate and color case harden frame. There are some other stampings but I can't make them out. The only name I find is Suhl on the base of the rib between the barrels. There is a monogram above the Suhl stamping I do not have a gauge to measure either barrel, they appear to be the same size. I do have a 45-70 that looks about the same size. The veteran took it to a gunsmith who told him it was a 460.

I won't have the gun back for a week or two. When I get it I'll take it to the local gunsmith and post the results. I appreciate your help with this.

OK, the owner doesn't want it going anywhere just yet. Guns International has a service where they appraise a firearm for a fee from your photographs and written description. For $75, it worth a try. I will post The results when I get them. Now to get the owner to bring it back.
I had this problem with another owner when he brought me an 1850 something Butterfield Pistol. He got so hyped up watching "Pawn Stars" that he decided he'd be better off driving out to Las Vegas and selling it himself. I had to give up on him and his pistol.
