I am be no means an expect on engraved blades, but given the photos provided (admittedly closeups are a challange) it's curious that no in/out marks, scrapes or scratches are evident across the inscription, which suggests it was applied "recently". Typical engraving suffer some marring over the years. Again, I'm not discounting the authenticity, but a more critical examination may be worthwhile. Please, some smart subject matter guys chime in.

Hi Andy:
I certainly enjoyed vising with you at the SOS. I forgot to ask you something.
Do you know whatever became of Bob Hunter?
I've tried to contact him over the years without success.

Havent spoken with Bob in a couple of years. Think he called me years back when OSU beat Alabama. Guessing he's still in Dublin California and hopefully doing well. Glad you made the SOS. It was great seeing you. MAX is only about 200 days out. Hope you can make it.

The engraving is 100% original war time. The Coat of arms has also been traced to
major-General Hans-Georg Schmidt. It is his family s coat of arms.He was also involved in the plot to kill Hitler. My father in law brought the dagger home from WW2

With he family providing such a wealth of info, and an apparent interest in his service, perhaps a polite letter to them might be well recieved; seeking photographs of his dagger in wear and perhaps offering them the piece in the future. Treading a fine line to be sure, but an opportunity few are given 70 years have passed. Best of luck!

Just for clarification, the inscription on the blade and the coat of arms is etched (not engraved).

Hello, etchings are done with templates (or covering laquer) and acid, engravings are done by special engraving tools. These two are totally different manufacturing methods and do have totally differing looks.
