These are all over the Internet- every conceivable marketplace... you may have seen it-a plain helmet with the years 1939 above and 1940 below. I do not own one, but I think it's a legit ww pattern that was not uncommon to begin with-- but got reproduced so many times- they are widely assumed to be fake or even fantasy pieces... in my mind the fist time I saw one- was the latter; fake/ fantasy.... so which is it? Real, repro, or imagined? (I've attached a few versions widely spread about online)... I await and encourage opinions here- so please post, especially if you have a picture of one of your own to share!

Mike,

What was the reasoning behind the 1939/1940 date? The Stahlhelm era was much earlier if I recall.

The pattern is well known and period, but this shown rings are all fakes.
It is a Westwall pattern in my opinion.

Usually brass, die struck, backside hollow and nickel plated.
And there is a very hard to get variant, 2 Piece, ring brass, very massiv and soldered on helmet.

Interesting.... the helmet is soldered on then? I see the circle/outline around the helmet inodals example... is this what to look for besides the hollow/brass struck with silver wash?

Sorry, maybe a missunderstanding in speach.
The one i showed is a one piece and die struck with hollow backside.
But there are other period ones around with soldered on helmet.

Hi dave - definitely not stahlhelm era, andy is of course correct... I also assumed them to be west wall rings, but have heard veteran, ww1, etc enough to throw it out there for discussion... Andy I don't have any other picture of these rings, but as odal pointed out- they're usually fakes as I don't often see them hollow and die struck, but rather as solid backed rings...odal I would love to see one with a soldered on helmet, anyone else own one to show?

I passed on one just like that years ago, I thought for sure it was fake given the price and the crudeness of it.....
