No restrictions on use, courtesy Robert Hess collection. Donated 2007. What do you all think of this?

This ring hurts every collector

Just because it's in a museum doesn't make it real. I don't like it.

Those runes do not look right and the SS was very fussy about their 'trademark'

Yes... the problem I have is that (along with some Ss cloth items evidently at the imperial war museum in U.K.) unless it's a display piece (and "museum quality" reproductions in that case, make sense for many reasons..) it was bequeathed by someone, and the museum now insures it as an original- that's a loss to the museum and the insurance company as well... do collectors knowingly do this if they or their inheritors cannot sell their estates because they aren't what they're supposed to be.... ??

The museum has quite a few donated rings, here's three more for discussion.... two appear to be and are described as a political prosonners ring, and a KZ inmates ring- along with what appears to be a Luftwaffe ring, although I'll leave it to you all to discuss...

The heart ring resembles WW1 era "trench art" style rings. Nothing to relate it to a "political prisoner". The Luft ring looks like a common 1930s monogram ring someone applied a Fallschirmjager shield overtop the engraving. As for the other ring, the "story" stretches the limits of credibility. Shame on this museum for not doing its research properly.

You can see the monogram underneath what I assume to be a stickpin...

The "heart-ring" obviously bears the inmates numbers of the two engaged inmates. Not an easy research but it a research about the numbers could perhaps lead to the insight if these were indeed political prisoners or prisoners of another reason (and if those numbers died really exist).

Also the "J"-ring obviously bears an inmate number.

Agree in all!

I would wonder about the heart ring. If this is a romantic item, then I'd expect a name or nickname, not the number the Nazis gave them !

With the cc ring, I doubt it. Everything about ccs that I have ever seen, from IDs, to patches to cloth has been fake. Would an inmate wear the ring or is this supposed to be a guards ring?

That's a good point about the heart ring, as far as the "J" ring I think Yugoslavian but like many trench art pieces very very hard to pinpoint period, can be made anywhere anytime by almost anyone.. I'd be more likely to guess that a survivor or a survivors descendant made it as a memorial piece post war (at best.... I agree nearly 100% was just straight fakes). I'm only guessing memorial possibly as I recall this article from The NY Times that highlighted the trend amongst young Israelis to get KZ number tattoos to honor their grandparents-- Times article

Now that we're posting camp made rings anyway, here's one made by a pole who served time in Sachsenhausen. Sadly i lost a lot of my other Berlin pics, so don't have any pics of the sides

hey tjebbe!
I might have some pics of your museum trip last year deep in the emails... I think I remember we talked about it when you returned....do you want me to take a look? That is a very interesting ring... i would certainly identify that as polish, I don't really know much beyond that about rings like this. Maybe piotr will come on and give this a look... and I got your pm, (for some reason I wasnt getting my notifications on waf..)I will get back to you tonight or tomorrow my good friend! Guys, check out tjebbes Danish ring if you get a chance... very cool patriotic piece!
