I could not figure out how to add pics onto an already started thread so I just started a new one. Wotan wanted to see the postal bayonet I just bought. Kind of disappointed in the scabbard, but what can you do? not bad for $145...

Hello Patrick69, you have a rare bayonet, even if the scabbard is repainted. Also you nearly never can say when it was done. It could be done during the period. Period wering pics (which I do collect too) show, that sometimes scabbards did show heavy wearing traces, so a period repaint is not out of reach. Just for interest, is the smooth pebbling of the grip plates original or due to a recess of a frog (kind of artistic or "laquered" leather)? Regards,

the smoothness of the grip plates, in my opinion, are original. I think I got a pretty good deal here...and believe it or not..I got it off of EBAY. I was really surprised I got it for the price I paid. Thanks again Wotan.

Patrick69, such smooth grip plates did occur from time to time. I am still not totally convinced if it is not residue (perhaps of the repainting???), see the markings in your pic. Perhaps you might check it carefully with a toothpick? Nevertheless, whatever it is, smooth manufactured plates or some residue, such a rare bayonet for this price, at ebay, is for sure a pretty good deal and a nice addition to each collection! Once I have had such a single bayonet without any accouterments for a long time, before I have gotten the group. BTW imho the repainted scabbard does not look too bad. Regards,

Have forgotten to explain: If you want to add pics to an already started thread just click the "Reply" button (down, to the right of each post), than you use the file manager as you did in your first post. If you use "Quick Reply" you additionally have to "Switch to Full Reply Screen" (at the end of the "Quick Reply" section) to get to the file manager. Regards,

Thanks Wotan, I'll take a close look tonight at the grip plates. I appreciate the help as well with the pics too.
In your opinion, how often does a postal knot or a DRP marked frog come around? did you see many at the SOS or MAX shows? I try to have all associated accouterments with my pieces, that keeps me busy until my next piece comes in.
Thanks again, Patrick

Thanks again, Patrick Hello Patrick, as said, during my WHOLE collector-life I have seen only two groupings (one of them is mine) where such a troddel was included. And only one or two troddels alone. So they are pretty rare. Regards,
