Hi gents,

I want to show something that you don’ t see too often. Known as Gunners Stiletto or Fusetto and used to measure the amount of gun powder loaded in a cannon by sticking it at the top of the gunpowder pile and measuring its depth. Also to measure the caliber of the bore and projectiles; it was also useful for cleaning the ignition chamber and for opening powder kegs. The blade is triangular, horn grip.

Interesting note, since the "regular" stiletto was often forbidden to carry by civilians, as being an assassin's weapon, the gunner's stiletto has been permitted to carry around. The large amount of these stilettos exist to these days because this was an attempt to surpass the rule. Also, it was used as last resort weapon in case the artillery positions were over-run. Popular in 17th and 18th century.

Very nice piece. I had not seen or known about these. What is the grip material, horn?

Thank you gentleman.

Jim,
Yes, the grip material is horn. Here are couple of pictures of the similar stilettos from the museums.
