Tom Wittmann has the very same type of knot listed on his site as "ACCOUT&P #37371 Sword Portepee of Mysterious Origin" and his description provides/suggests some very interesting speculation.

From Wittman's page:

This Sword Portepee is definitely a German item but I am not sure of its usage. I remember seeing a number of these years ago; apparently a box of them was discovered at that time and sold throughout the collecting community. It is possible the knot was for an Austrian sword or perhaps was from some other country affiliated with the Reich.

At any rate the strapping is a very fine aluminum bullion with textured surfaces and two thin red lines that run the length. The stem is covered with textured bullion and there is a round orange ball that is split in the center and decorated with bullion.

The lower ball has a cap and lower covering of aluminum bullion thread. The insert is an orange fabric that matches the stem configuration as well as the decorative trim in the strapping.

A nice knot here that appears to be unissued.

The two sword came back up for sale! What would be a reasonable price to pay?? The general condition would be average from what I can see. What would be a safe price to pay??

the lion head is an Eickhorn Blucher pattern, don't see these all that often and it appears to be brass based, I say anywhere between $550-700USD.

The pantherhead from Paul S., semi rare pattern and maker...I would say around the $700 mark on that one. Both very nice swords, hope you get them and figure out what that knot is.

Good luck!! Patrick

I have two of the port epée and always considered them Austrian AF just prior to annexation.

I would agree with Patrick on both swords and prices.
