Does anybody out there have any in wear pics of the Prinz Eugen with a SS knot? this may be beating a dead horse but where does it say that the SS wore this pattern of sword? reason I ask is because I may have a sword inbound and would like to start looking for the appropriate knot for it. It appears the damn SS knot will be as expensive as the sword! So I would like to see a in wear pic to wrap my head around it.

Hello Patrick69, first I have to end an ongoing, wrong story: the well known photograph of a "Prinz Eugen saber in wear" in one of the MOLLO books is NO Prinz Eugen saber. The Prinz Eugen saber, as you know when you do own one, has a VERY distinct handguard motive and pommel eagle which can not be recognized in the photograph cited.
I do collect "wearing..." pics and do own about 1700. There are three army studio photographs with PE sabers in between.
AND I do own the only TRUE photograph of an SSmember wearing (doubtless! and detailed) a PE saber. Itīs an SSStandartenjunker of Standarte 1, "Deutschland". And -yes- unfortunately for you (when I see your remark concerning the price wink ) it has an SSportepee wrapped around the grip in the proper manner.
Sorry, I do not show any wearing pics any more in the net because there are crooks around who download them and show them everwhere in the net and make an otherwise valuable photograph (and believe me, I have payed much money for my collection...) nearly worthless.
Regards,

thanks Wotan, that's the info I was looking for, my credit card is going to hate you a little bit, but thanks all the same.. smile I have found a couple of these knots online in some of the big-guy's sites....just have a hard time swallowing paying @$895 for a knot, but it is what it is. I weigh the pros and cons in my head as in: CON..knot is not original to the piece, does it really add value to the sword if added? PRO..it's friggin' SS, the "wow" factor is there...CON: Price, $895 would buy a bitchin' 2nd luft or damn near another Eugen sword. So I don't know, once I have the sword in hand I'll decide then. thanks again Wotan, I really appreciate it.

I would just put an Army knot on it and call it a day. I love the PE saber and it would be cool with a SS knot but you can always take that money and buy a SS saber and then you would have to buy another SS knot. I love sabers and have about 30 and the PE is one that has keeps eluding me so congrats on the purchase.

Patrick69, I hope we can see pics of the PE, regardless how you decide yourself, once you have it in hands.

Looking forward to some photos myself, just offhand my recollection is that the Mollo picture is circa 1942. Not that it means anything to the many dealers/others who've attached SS knots to the PE sabers to jack up the prices using that photo as the basis. Best Regards, Fred

Fred/Wotan...Sword will be here next week. I had an unexpected (but very welcome) purchase on an Army dagger (see the army/navy/luft section under "deep orange grip army") so I had to push sword out. I will post pics as soon as I get it.

Patrick69. Save your money and put an army knot on your PE. The Mollo picture has caused controversy ever since vol 3 of his reference on SS uniforms was first published, over 40 years back. The officer pictured was not a member of the SS-Prinz Eugen div. Mollo's caption does not mention the Prinz Eugen div, the sabre is described as "the old pattern SS sabre with officer's knot". There is, of course, no reason why a W-SS officer would not have purchased a PE sabre and put the SS officer knot on it.
Attached are pictures of a PE with packaging, also with army knot and hanger.

WOW!!! beautiful Barry...they don't get any better than that. I passed on getting a SS knot. I found a real nice army sword knot with triple silver rows on green leather but with a black "stuffing" in the ball. And yes, a helluva lot cheaper than a SS knot... smile

Wotan, mine lacks the etched blade. Thank you for showing your fantastic etched blade PE sabre.

Kind regards

I am aware of at least one in exactly the same condition (etched blade, paper wrapped scabbard - therefore unworn) which has been auctioned at HH some years ago (for 15.000 Euros without charge...) and one with etched blade but without the paper wrapping.

Great swords here,
Wotan, how rare is that etch on yours, apart from the 3 that you are aware of was this etched used commonly on other Eickhorn swords.
