I just observed an Ebay sale closing for a German S 84/98 nA S bayonet, in very nice condition, made by Erfurt & dated 1915. It sold for $799. Is that really what they're worth; or, did somebody get ripped-off big-time?

The worth of this bayonet is in the eyes of the buyer. While most collectors would tend to agree that $799 for an S 84/98 is high, the buyer obviously saw something there that he really wanted or needed.

I have paid ridiculously high prices for some items in my collection when a rare or unheard of variation came on the market.

That being said, in auctions, sometimes one can get carried away and need to bid ever higher just to keep the other bidder from getting it.

Regardless of condition that price sounds aberrational to me. For a equally nice KS98, perhaps. I tried searching under Ebay closed auctions using using "bayonet" and other related terms in the search string, but could not find the listing you referred to. However, if you want to get a shock, search using the the keyword I mentioned, click on the box to the upper right of the completed list when it appears, and refine the list by selecting "list by highest price first". Some rare, early German bayonets recently sold and for a King's ransom I might add!
