Hello,

Some time ago we discussed the controversial topic of the white NCO tunic authorized for a very few months in 1936. During that discussion skepticism was expressed whether or not white backed SchuPo NCO sleeve eagles were ever produced. At that time I only had in my possession an example of such an eagle of an unknown, unverified pattern, so my support of its authenticity was conditional.

Now, however; I have come into possession of another white backed eagle which I have no doubt whatsoever is authentic. That eagle is shown here.

This pattern of sleeve insignia is a very early example as evidenced by design elements, particularly the ribbons at the bottom of the wreath and the inclusion of laurel leaves in the wreath. Such eagles have also been verified in period photographs.

I think that this is rather strong evidence that white summer tunics and insignia were indeed produced after the uniform regulations of 1936 were instituted.

Here is the same eagle shown with insignia of the same pattern and manufacturer.

Any input by others regarding the existence of the evasive white NCO tunic would be appreciated. Deuster, the go to reference for police insignia, does not mention these and offers no regulations specifying such insignia.

Bill,

I've always liked the looks of these Polizei eagles and have enjoyed the many patterns you gentlemen have shared with us, especially the bullion officer's patterns.

I don't know if you saw this interesting photo that I'd posted in the SS forum, in-wear photos? Just thought it might fit in here due to the white dress jacket? That was the first time it was ever posted anywhere so I thought I'd ask ... wink

Thanks and best regards!

Bill

Bill,

That is a very nice photo of a variation of the white Summer Officer tunic. A great shot of a Police Officer who is also a member of the SS. He is wearing the SS dagger with the Portepee and has an Alte Kampfer stripe but is not wearing SS runes below his breast pocket. Great photo!

Thanks for posting the photo. Photos of police white tunics in wear are very few. It looks like he is wearing a green backed sleeve eagle. Here is the correct insignia for his tunic.

George,

Speaking of RUNES, have you ever seen a photo of the elusive black runes being worn on a white tunic?

Bill,

I can't recall seeing a set of what I thought were the black backed runes on a white tunic. Of course it is difficult to tell the color on B/W photographs.

This is an interesting six button white tunic with pleated lower pockets. I cannot tell if this officer has French cuffs or not. Often Officers did not wear collar tabs with the white tunic but I agree that this fellow has what appear to be green collar tabs along with all his other insignia including the Alte Kampfer stripe. Since he is clearly an SS member (wearing the dagger) he has chosen not to wear the runes. He has also chosen to wear his dagger from under his tunic rather than through the sword/dagger slit in the pocket.

A stylish fellow with a custom tailored tunic.

George

Hello Mr. Unland,
Just joined this board and have appreciated your collection of Police related material.
As I was going through this old thread on the WAF, I came across this photo posted by "djpool"
It is post #50 part way down page 4.
