Hi all, it's complete with the hanger and there's a green mold developing on one side of the large flap and the same green in the stag on one side of the grip. How do I fix it? I'm sorry but I can't get any photos to resize and be accepted to post. thanks

well hell fellas, should it be cleaned or not? out of sixty some views someone should be knowledgeable enough to give me an ideal of how to remove it without damaging the value of the dagger.

Hi dale, welcome! Perhaps if you try one of the resizing tools for the pics, they might load...there's a forum filled with good advice on this for new folks. I used a resizer on the iPad and it worked ok, I just shrunk them down with my photo editor. Or of course, pm one of the mods. I'm not sure abt the green mold, sounds tricky. Is it possible it could be gently cleaned with a soft cloth and some warm soapy water just to see if it comes off a little? IMO that seems like a no harm attempt at a historical piece. True, uncleared and untouched is great, but green mold is not, so hopefully that's good advice. Regardless, welcome to the forum and these guys really do know their stuff, let's give em a chance to see your post, good luck in any case dale God bless Mike

Mike, Thanks for your response, I read the thread about resizing the photos and worked about an hour on the resizeing and it showed the photos being the right size however they were never accepted. I've posted a lot of gun pictures and never had so much trouble. It kills me, I have a lot of photos and a lot of questions. thanks for your time dale

Hey Jim, I appreciate you doing this and I'm sorry the others photos didn't work. I will see if i can get someone to take pictures for me. The mold doesn't show very well in the stag and the worst mold is on the back of the big flap of the hanger. It appears in up to half inch or so circles of green mold like on a wall. I thought mabe I could take a small soft brush and scrub the stag and then wax it but i was to do anything until talked with some collectors. thanks again dale

I ran the file through two resizers and got this one to work.

Beautiful old Rad, I have a few myself and I can only suggest not to confuse mold with patina. Mold must be removed as it will rot leather and rust steel. I have been told to used virgin olive oil on my stags (lite coat rubbed and wiped dry) make sure no salt or other added stuff. I will also use the finest steel wool with Rem oil tto gently remove surface rust from steel. Careful not to rub too hard as you don't want to remove patina or natural carbon staining from the blade. As for leather I'll use a good leather balm to clean mold but know that some of the green stuff is a natural reaction of brass on leather. I'm not lucky enough to have straps on my rads but my USMC Boyt bolo scabbards have that green stuff around the brass and it is a thing of beauty. These are just my opinions and my old military training tells me to keep my equipment in good working order. We all have to find our own comfort zone.
