Will be selling this item and looking for thoughts on value. I have a strong idea of what it is worth but other opinions welcome. Thanks

OK for starters the engraved pommel cap appears to be made of brass if so this is not correct.

I agree it is not correct but it very well could be period. Maybe it was a penny added by the GI who brought it home. The monogram is in the German style. The grip looks a little funky. Can you post a better picture of it?

I will try and post some additional pics later on. The monogrammed end piece was possibly added by the ss officer with his initials. In either case, four very renowned dealers have confirmed by pictures that it is authentic and valuable. Have been offered over $6K to wholesale it to a couple of them but looking for information on a good place to sell it and maybe ideas on retail values. I gather the retail is $8K to $12K for swords in this condition but thought others that own these may share what they paid or give opinions. Thanks

Points noted, adding that is the knucklebow bent or is it just in the imaging? With the old price versus condition question at least IMO making it harder to affix a value, having seen lower prices for even some relatively untouched items at this time, unlike earlier. With much better pictures needed I think to give a more accurate appraisal of value. Best Regards, Fred

The hand guard does appear to have a bend in it at the top, but, as Fred notes, it could be distortion in the picture. The blade appears to have some staining. It appears the hand guard is a bit loose. You can see where it does not quite meet the upper part of the grip and in the top view photo, the guard is decidedly off to one side. The grip should have 13 segments. I can only see 12, but the photos might make it look like it has 12. Initials on a pommel cap are not unheard of. What mystifies me is, if a piece was added for the initials, why? Usually, the initials are directly made on the top of the steel cap. Could the cap have been silver- or gold-plated over brass and the gold or silver has worn off? I agree the initials appear to be in authentic style, VO or OV? The SS portepee is desirable, but, unfortunately, this one is not in the best of condition. It appears to be the earlier, somewhat scarce shorter version. Assuming all is genuine and there is no damage to the guard, your information as to price range is about right for retail, perhaps centered between the high and the low. The original owner should not be hard to determine from the SS officers list with those unusual initials. You might have one of the major dealers sell it on a commission basis. That way, you don't have to settle for wholesale and, after the commission, could well realize a decent price, as opposed to selling it yourself.

Thanks for the replies. The initials do appear to be OV or VO but I haven't been able to identify the officer.
There are 13 segments to the grip. The blade length is 32 3/4" and the overall length is 38 5/8."

Yes, we are considering a consignment if we can't find a collector to buy it.

I think realistically if you were offered 6k, you should have taken it. The price you are quoting 8 to 12K would be for an early all nickel model. Unless the monogram can be documented to a officer with an interesting history.

I agree that you had a fair offer for your SS-Offizier Degen. You will not get much more than the offer after you pay consignment or auction fees and with much less hassel. You were not being cheated or low-balled IMHO.
