I am new to collecting German daggers and learning as much as I can through this excellent site and other resources. As a collector of WW2 German pistols(Luger,P38,C96) I have determined there is quite a difference in avoiding fakes. As an example,I purchased a BYF42"Black Widow"Luger and upon receipt disassembled it and verified 16 individual hand-crafted numbered pieces and TypeA grips and original finish during the three day inspection. It is hard to make a purchase of a dagger without such a process available.I assume the only solution is to learn and find a trusted source for whatever is purchased. Thanks for any advice.

Hello and Welcome.

You will find daggers (and medals, helmets, uniforms) very interesting I hope.

Your assumption is correct about learning and about finding trusted sources. Some daggers easily come apart, but as with your Luger, you still have to know what you are looking at. My advice would be:

Looking through the individual forums here and see what tickles your fancy. There are quite a few choices. One of each? All makers for one dagger?

If you decide on SS / Army / Luftwaffe / Navy there are excellent detailed reference books available. Buy and read!

If there are shows near you go to them and see what they actually look and feel like.
