Can anyone positively identify this knot? The strap and slide are black leather with silver stripes. The insert on the bottom is red. The stripes on the ball appear to be green and red.

Brian,

I believe what you have is a heavily tarnished Feuerwehr bayonet knot, the cat's anus is probably carmine.

I have tons of these & they age differently, some perfectly & some like yours which barely resemble their original state.

I've had it for years and always assumed that what it was. After checking several of the larger dealers sites, I was not sure due to probably four different knots on Fireman's Bayonets. Back in the parts drawer, thanks.

No problem Brian. You could also, of course, have a rare Justizbeamte knot but it's tough to tell sometimes because the tarnished silver bullion sort of mimics the gilt on the bulb & strap. One way to verify is to look underneath the slide to see if the wire is indeed silver & not gold.

Looking at it with a magnifying glass, I can see the bulb is green and red. The stripes under the slide are silver.

If the stripes are really green then you've stumped me. Can you gingerly pull one of the cords slightly out so you can see the underside of it? From the picture it looks very similar to the tarnish I have on at least a dozen FW knots.

OK, I did as suggested. I can factually state that it is red & green on the outside while red and silver on the inside. It must be a one of a kind, rare prototype camo, experimental portepee. Otherwise referred to as a tarnished Fireman's Bayonet knot. The mystery is solved.

I was going to say it could also be a knot from the special HJ Christmas detail at Berchtesgaden. smile

That's it! I'll bring it to the SOS, in the Special Table Section. COA included, suitable for framing.
